Anyway, for all the acting talent involved, this is a rather uninspired, by the numbers jump scare ride. So to get anything at all out of this movie/review, play the game now: Finish this sentence: Her gift is nothing like 'The gift ... '. Right. Now go enjoy this game watching 'Audition' - or disgust yourself with 'Children of Men'.

Along with Swordfish, this is one of the most famous and amusing examples of a pair of breasts completely overwhelming and enveloping the film around them as far as the movie's reputation goes. Presumably producers and writers and Sam Raimi put months or years into trying to make a good film, only for ten seconds of nipples to render it all moot. I find that humorous and a bit sociologically fascinating.

The Gift is a film with some creepy and spooky imagery, but apart from that it's a mundane murder mystery that you have very little reason to watch. It has no way to engage you on either an intellectual or an emotional level. It doesn't allow for you to think or question what the characters are saying, and apart from the aforementioned creepy imagery -- typical of a Sam Raimi film -- there is nothing that's actually worth your time. Skip The Gift and do something more worth your time.

Stupendously underrated, this is a gem of a film with a palpably foreboding atmosphere, lovely cinematography, great direction, and excellent performances from all involved, especially Blanchett, Ribisi, Swank, and, perhaps most of all, Keanu Reeves, in what is arguably his best role ever, and almost certainly his best aside from My Own Private Idaho.

There's no denying that the cast and director does a nice job in "The Gift". However, if you're expecting a scream-out-loud thriller you'll definitely be disappointed. Instead, you're going to get a slow-moving drama that happens to have a psychic and a murder in the storyline. It keeps the attention enough to be a descent movie to rent on a Sunday to be watched while you're doing chores around the house.

It's a sad thing when the movie starts out so good but in the end, the lukewarm continuation leaves you feeling neutral. The setting and the cast is wonderful and the mood is genuinely creepy with all those good small town / trailer park vibes of people just trying to make a living. It's still worth a watch if you're not setting your expectations too high and I recommend it for the awesome cast alone. It's got some great moods, too!

Viewed September 18, 2021. A solid, often genuinely creepy psychological thriller about Cate Blanchett as a psychic in a small southern town who uses her talents to help solve a murder. Sam Raimi is working in the more restrained mode that he employed to such great effect in A Simple Plan. Like that film, this has a great empathetic eye for the inhabitants of its rural community, an unabashed melodramatic streak, and a group of great performances.

A film with a lot of ups and downs. I kept finding myself in two states while watching this, elated and bored. The parts that are good in this film are awesome, then a dry patch hits you and you forget why you were enjoying it so much in the first place. Great acting with a really good cast. Even Reeves has a great performance, but he does play a good scumbag. I loved some of the shots, you can tell Raimi handled this. Strange that Billy Bob Thornton wrote it. Oh and I hate Hilary Swank, evil.

While "The Gift" is a perfectly decent thriller, it is also a downright vanilla Raimi movie. It marks a point in his career where he was having difficulty retaining his identity while filming respectable, Hollywood productions. Decent, but disappointing only because Raimi's time would have been better spent on something more...Raimi.

Pretty good murder mystery/thriller which concentrates on the main character having psychic ability. A very well known cast do a fine job with the material, especially Blanchett who shows a lot of emotion. If the film were a little less boring (at times) it would be much more memorable.

Hollywood needs to stop producing stuff that Billy Bob Thornton writes, at least when he's not in it. If there is a way to make solving murders by ESP compelling, this definitely isn't it. And whoever cast this has clearly never set foot in a small Southern town. Everyone in this looks like they're flying back to LA in the morning. Despite the flick getting just about everything wrong, Cate Blanchett is quite good.

It's a weirdly overstuffed story that's part psychic horror, part domestic drama, part Southern Gothic, part courtroom thriller, part murder mystery... and there's even a little repressed childhood trauma thrown in for good measure. Part of the reason for having soooo many characters and subplots seems to be attempted misdirection and red herrings, but the twist is still extremely obvious anyway, so that didn't really pay off. The insanely stacked cast helps keep things engaging at least.

As it is, the movie is just utterly mediocre and suffers from some awful writing (especially when it comes to the pedophilia subplot and the pointless court scenes).
