By focusing on Lisbeth's character and past she loses all of her mystique and really loses her value as a character in the plot - which is, sadly, based entirely on her. So we've got a regular crime thriller that's average in mostly everything; the theme might still be unordinary, but some scenes are seriously unbelievable. But it's definately not in same league as the first movie.

Poor filmmaking with a plot to make one wonder what would happen if Lisbeth Salander and Jack Bauer had a baby, as surely they're the most unlucky people ever. It's more 'Greatest Bits' than adaptation, which shows in the Blomkvist character doing nothing plot wise, whilst having half the screen time. A crippled baddie and his brute henchman, sporting a genetic inability to feel pain, invites an obvious comparison to James Bond. I'd like my social commentary to be a bit smarter, thanks.

Good enough to keep you interested, ridiculous enough to question what the hell they were thinking. The villain who "can't feel pain" has to be the laziest thing ever and a lot of this movie feels lazy and uninspired as well. I thought the climax was very well done and it's a shame that the rest of the film wasn't that good, cause clearly they could make a decent movie. Hope the 3rd one is better.

Mediocre but absorbing. The cinematography is pleasing and the characters (and actors) keep you wanting to know what happens next. If there's one thing the series succeeds at, it's generating sympathy.

It is perhaps unfair to judge this on the same scale as "real" movies, since this and the sequel were made for TV and re-cut for cinema after the succes of the first movie. That said: As with the book, the story is inferior to the first one's tight little whodunnit-thriller. I really don't see what the fuzz is about...

Incredible continuation of THE GIRL saga improves upon the original by being much tighter and better focused, and also giving co-star Nqvist more to do. A rich vein of black humour is also welcome, and serves as an effective balance to the violent proceedings. The real attraction though is the incredible Noomi Rapace, who steals the film again; interesting plot twists plus an unforgettable villian in silver-haired Spreitz make this one of the best action thrillers in years.

A good movie, but a big drop-off from the first one. Whereas the first did a great job of adapting the novel, this one feels like it glosses over many of the characters and subplots in order to fit in as much as possible.

More unpredictable thrills and plot twists this time but it also suffers from incoherent structure and pace. At three hours it's a real clunky mess that wears you out, especially since the cliffhanger ending offers hardly any closure. Despite all that, it's still an engaging and entertaining film if you can muster some attention span for it. The central characters are so compelling and well played you almost don't mind that the story is just basically the plottiest set-up plot for the 3rd part.

(spolers) After reading alot of these reviews on this movie, it really perturbed me. The first movie in the series ended the story it set out to do, introducing main characters lisbeth and blomkvist, setting you up to know who they are, what they do and how they interact with one another. the second movie focuses on lisbeths life and everything that surrounds her. I honestly can't figure out why thats a bad thing to these 'critics'.

Stieg Larsson's books are great, his millenium trilogy reached cult status and what about the movies? The First one is great, dark, thrilling and gripping until the end, the second one is really disappointing, and the last part is okay, but too many action scenes annoy in perpetuity. I recommend you to read the books. The Movies are only a constrained alternative.

The mystery/thriller plot is serviceable (although the ending was pretty bad), but the best thing about the two films are the two leads. In a way, I wish the film would spend more time on their relationship and developing Lisbeth's character; or get better myster/thriller plots.

Definately inferior to its prodecesor, "Flickan som lekte med elden" is nevertheless a solid and engrossing piece of mainstream storytelling. The second part of the saga is weaker, perhaps because the mysterey is less interesting, or because the story is more implausible (like Lisbeth's a la Uma Thurman escape) or maybe because the protagonists get practically no screen time together. Still, Alfredson is visually competant and the fine performances keep the whole thing constantly compelling.

It's tighter and I got most of the answers that were unanswered after the first film. The plot is still basic and more or less takes a back seat to the characters and their attempts to solve a simple mystery, but in this series, this works well. There wasn't much reason that I can see for this story to still have continued on, but I'm glad that it did. There are a lot of unnecessary sequels that end up becoming a waste of talent; The Girl Who Played with Fire isn't one of those.

If not 4 the visceral charge that comes w/ the violence-against-women theme & the previously untapped cathartic power fantasy embodied by its heroine, this would b 1 mediocre mystery thriller given the number of whys & hows carelessly glossed over 2 drive the narrative threads 2gether. Still, Salander's a wonderful creation & since the mystery this time around is explicitly connected 2 her origins, this sequel is more absorbing than its predecessor.

CSI pulp fiction with odd graphic novel/superhero elements. Most of it is nonsense. Larsson's characters live in a non-reality based world full of ridiculous coincidences and conveniences so this is hard to take seriously. Noomi Rapace is cool, though.

Such a terrible shame Noomi Rapace couldn't be the star in Fincher's version(s). Unlike my GF I think the Hollywood $$$ & Fincher's great skills make the US remake better in almost every respect (except messing with the ending). However, not using the actress who defined the role, speaks perfectly good English (See Sherlock Holmes II, Prometheus etc) and is (to me) prettier than her replacement, was a travesty. Missed opportunity to make GwDT Fincher's best ever. Why did that happen?

A solid sequel, though it does come apart at times. There are a lot of moments where things are clearly happening only for story purposes and the separate storylines coming together feels clumsy and forced. Still, the performances remain strong, there's interesting characterization, and the pacing is such that it's easy to ignore the stumbles and move on to the next mystery piece or action scene.

Same issues as Oplev's version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo; only worse. A hodgepodge of events piled on top of each other, while characters find themselves dragged from one to the other. No one seems to have any control or charisma or an ounce of resemblance to what they were created to do. A big failure.

I think it's the weakest of the trilogy, but it's still good. It's more of a bridge between the first and the third, but it's still an intriguing film and as usually, the character of Lisbeth is interesting enough to carry the film. It's not amazing, but it's a good solid thriller when taken as part of a trilogy. Score is not a grade.

A slight cut above "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", particularly as far as the story went (even though it is difficult to keep up with all those Swedish names). The lesbian love scene was still tedious and her nose rings were just as obnoxious, although she dumped them mid-film for disguise purposes. They dropped their otherwise pretty effective realism for the resurrection--jeeeeez. (Subtitles often obscured by the background. But if you speak Swedish, no prob.....Just dub 'em!)

This is the most violent of the series, a trilogy that adheres very closely to the the novels. Lisbeth Salandar should go down as one of the great characters of detective fiction. I didn't like this one nearly as much as the first installment. Noomi Rapace was still great though. I just felt that the murder mystery of the first one was a much more powerful story than human trafficking. In fact this movie didn't really focus too much on the main aspect of that crime. It really just felt kind of muddy. I'm not sure if that is the script's fault or the author's fault. Still good acting all around. I liked the blonde haired Jaws character who couldn't feel pain.

Pretty humdrum. I've no idea how Larsson's books sold so many copies, because there's no evidence here of Lisbeth Salander being a compelling character in any way. She has dialogue in about 3 scenes, the rest of the film she's just being a ninja, hacking on her laptop, or invisible. This story has very little edge and feels more like a TV movie or an episode of a procedural. The production is somewhat slick but the script gets it all so wrong in terms of character screen time or dramatic scenes.

Not as good as the first one, but still good. I was really impressed in Dragon Tattoo how entertaining the mystery was. Great ending though.

An improvement over its predecessor, but still no great shakes. Nyqvist remains so uncharismatic that he's virtually transparent, and the story still seems needlessly cluttered as a means of distracting from its no-big-dealness, but there's some genuine emotion to be found here, as well as a few surprises, and the overall pacing is stronger. Also, once again, Rapace's virtually the whole show; I'm becoming a pretty big fan of Lisbeth, if not the franchise as a whole.

The mystery element isn't quite as well conceived as Dragon Tattoo, and there doesn't seem to be any woman in this trilogy who hasn't been sexually abused, but it's still a smart, well thought-out, and well made thriller. Probably the weakest of the film trilogy. The belief here is that slowing down the pace automatically equals character building, but this is approached by simply revealing huge chunks of information about characters, which becomes a drag. The strength of Lisbeth's character relies less on what is said verbatim and more about her reactions to other people and their games of power. It has some good moments, but ultimately is slow in an unsatisfying way.

Good. The second installment to the trilogy is dwarfed by the superior plot of the first. Also, Miss Salander now returns as Bond with a similar, comically larger than life, nemesis. The direction, production and performances are fine, its just that the sequel's plot simply pales in comparison to the first movie. Recommended.

Wow, they really made a mess here, isn't it? I don't know exactly what, as I haven't read the books. The story in the movie has mostly no interest, it's empty, it looks already too long... I cannot imagine what could be added but what could be cut. So my guess is they just made a mess taking things almost randomly. The worst thing is Salander doesn't appear a lot and when she does is just a bit better than correct, so the most interesting thing I found in first one is lost.

Certainly not as strong as its predecessor, but still a very entertaining thriller. Alfredson's direction is quite pretty, but considerably less atmospheric than Oplev's. Once again however the leads are excellent and the plot, although not breaking much in the way of new ground, is very engaging. That said I have heard the novel (which I haven't read) has a far more intricate plot and much of it is lost in the movie? I've mixed feelings over the ending, which worked well until the final scene.

Noomi's version of Lisbeth, one of the most intriguing performances in recent cinema, is now more of an all-purpose action heroine than a high-functioning sociopath with a photographic memory and extraordinary cyber talents. That she's both haunted and driven by a harrowing past is further developed, but she spends much more time inexplicably breaking into her enemies' homes, holding them hostage on makeshift pulley systems almost like Jigsaw and unaccountably escaping utterly fatal situations.
