Davis gets a deserved top billing for this one, the first since Ex-Lady in 1933 (Fog Over Frisco doesn't count--her role was relatively small and Warner's was just cashing in on Of Human Bondage buzz). The role is not quite an ideal fit, but she's very good and, despite its implausible premise, carries the movie quite well. Alison Skipworth is fabulous (and gets quite a few fun throwaway lines). Predictably, the Waldorf luncheon scene is the highlight of the movie.

A lesser Bette Davis film from 1935. The main reason why this doesn't stand out from the lot is Ian Hunter's bland performance as Davis' husband. If only they'd swapped Hunter and Colin Clive. But what is fun is watching Davis along with her "teacher of society" Alison Skipworth go out and up-stage Hunter's lover Katharine Alexander at the restaurant. A really amusing scene. Davis & Skipworth make such a team! The ladies steal the show. Hunter kills it and Clive just doesn't get to play enough.
