In the furious The Girl in the Rumor, as tight, absorbing, and intricate a 55-minute film as any ever made, a confrontation between two sisters is staged and cut as a series of complementary, mirroring, responsive movements in and out of frame, resulting in a dizzying pattern in which the two sisters ceaselessly replace each other. Never thought I'd describe a Naruse film as pretentious, but here it is. His gimmicky editing is distracting and short-circuits any involvement with the characters and story.

Tension in the family. And it's like everything falling apart in slow motion. And then we leave them with everything hanging up in the air.... Wish Mikio Naruse had made more out of the story so that at least something was established and not just a destruction of a happy family.

Well made and well acted but the story doesn't feel complete it feels like it just stops at the halfway point.
