Fincher is, as always, obsessed with the procedural, and it's always nice to see him revisit the genre. But here the details are so stupid -- bible verses written in code in a diary, oh christ -- that the script threatens to capsize the whole project before it's begun. Add in a weirdly Neanderthal incarnation of "feminism," and this thing is a self-serious mess. It's a stupid story for which far too much talent has assembled.

Can't live up to its amazing trailer but still a solid movie and worth seeing. The acting is excellent as well with Daniel Craig giving easily his best performance to date. Rooney Mara is someone to watch as well. The ending is a let down and I thought it dragged at times. Has some tense moments that are aided by yet another great Trent Reznor score and it's Fincher so of course its directed impeccably. I think my score would go up with another viewing.

Beginning with a wet-dream "Bond-intro meets Nine Inch Nail video" title-sequence, the rest of the film is surprisingly restrained. It follows both the Swedish version's style and the book's unnessesarily eclectic structure closer than one could have hoped for from Fincher. Rapace is obviously a hard act to follow, but Mara manages to create an interesting character in her own right. Summed up: A decent dark thriller, a worthy remake (for once) but less than you could have hoped for from Fincher

Two movies adapt the same book. Yet its amazing how much they can vary in quality. Masterful directing from Fincher, a great screenplay from Zaillian, another tone settting score from Reznor/Ross really elevate what could of been average to brilliant. I loved the style, camerawork, editing and powerhouse performances from leads Mara and Craig. As soon as the best opening credits since Enter the Void had passed, I was entranced start to finish.

Coolest opening credits since Enter The Void. Men hating women from the vikings through biblical times up to modern sweden. Completely Similar to Oplev's but it still worth your while if you want to see the hollywood machine crank out another well produced version of a softcore european thriller. It's the perfect crime story - not unlike the one in the film. And the second good Fincher in a row. He might amount to something, good or okay.

Not enough anal rape. But really, this is a mess. Suffers from the Fincher effect aka LOOK AT HOW DARK AND BADASS I AM! There are so many worthless scenes that are supposed to develop the main characters, but yet come off as a pure idiocy (really Lisbeth, you're going to that social worker's apartment after he's just raped you in the mouth?). Then comes 40 minutes of absolute nothingness after the climax which was nothing more than a bullshit dues ex machina. Most overrated of 2011? I think yes.

Color me underwhelmed. Fincher worked his magic, as only Fincher can, but that still doesn't change the fact that the source material is on par with a Hardy Boy's mystery (but with more rape) or a Scooby Doo adventure (with fewer pedophiles dressed up as ghosts...but more rape).

My problem with the source material and the moody and highly entertaining original Swedish film is their obvious, almost crude take on misogynistic themes. Thankfully, Fincher has circumvented this issue by modulating the more overt elements of the story to create a leaner, cooler, more stylish, more streamlined, and altogether more compelling film adaptation. Masterfully edited and directed. Plus Rooney Mara is a revelation. Can't wait to see more from her.

I can't really be compelled to give this any better or any worse rating than the original, but in a roundabout way, that's issuing a lot of praise: how many times have we seen American remakes of European movies fall flat on their face and just embarrass themselves? This one definitely does not! David Fincher's adaptation is phenomenal, and story-wise, I find it to be at least parallel (if not slightly better) than 2009's version. Though it removed some things that were probably better left in.

Better in almost every aspect than the Swedish version - direction, soundtrack, pacing, villain and yes, Lisbeth Salander. The main problem is inherent in that the story itself just isn't as engrossing as say Seven or Zodiac. As someone with a background in the country it was nice to see it getting the Fincher treatment, also feeling somewhat qualified in saying those turning their noses up at this in favor of the original are basically wrong. Liked the subtle dig at IKEA's fascist past.

It's a good film, but at the end of the day an unnecessary remake, that fails to bring anything new to the table. Yes I know this is David Fincher I am talking about. Also, I hope that Rooney Mara, my future wife, will never discover this review.

A film that grips you from the captivating opening (another excellent Reznor soundtrack) and keeps you on a short attentive leash all the way to the credits. Oh god, Mara's revenge scene was one of the best things I've seen all year. Gripe and compare stale remakes or berate actors for their accents all you want, it still deserves a watch.

This movie is a study in how you can take a mediocre book and transfer it into a work of art. Every shot is magnificent. A boring trackshot of a train turns into fine art. The atmosphere is bleak and dirty or warm and cozy just the way Fincher does it at his best. The actors does a great job and Rooney Mara is a great choice for Salander. She convinces as opposed to her Swedish counterpart.

Pulpy material elevated to something more substantial and entertaining by Fincher and crew. His style is still perfectly executed, and everyone else is on top of the ball, once again. Rooney Mara in particular stands out, a very strong performance that makes the character her own and makes us care. Adheres a bit too close to a novelistic structure, but with all the talent here, that's overlookable.

Well unlike the original swedish verson they have managed to make Micke as hansom as he is in the books, however once again they downplay the fact that he is a player. Rooney does well but i for one still perfer Noomi's portrail. It's not a bad movie it just lacks that special thing we have grown accustomed to in a Fincher movie. All in all overall okay.

2½ hours is a long running time when you've seen it all recently. If you haven't watched Oplev's adaptation, you can probably add at least 10. I prefer Rapace to Mara as Salander, a popular character that I find ridiculous, but Craig does good, natural work as Blomkvist. Even the lowpoints of Fincher's career are compentently made films but this is his least inspired one to date. Let's pray he won't end up wasting his talents on sequels.

If you haven't read the book or seen the original then maybe this dull, slow thriller is for you. Having done both, I found it to be Fincher's weakest film. He doesn't bring anything new to the table other than English dialogue with weird Russian accents. The opening credit scene is amazing. It is completely misplaced but it is by far the best part of the film and is on par with the opening of Fight Club. This film is guilty of the worst thing a remake can be - completely unnecessary.

A bit oddly paced at times, but overall a very effective and potent adaptation of the novel. I'd say Mara plays Salander equally as well as Rapace did, and despite Craig delivering a very solid performance, he was a little too muscular to be fully believable as a weak journalist. I kept thinking "Come on Bond, you've gotten out of tougher spots than this!" Still, definitely did the source material justice.

This movie is friggin' awesome. It's got a solid plot that keeps you watching with your complete attention on the screen. I liked Craig and Mara both a lot, the direction was good, and the music was equally awesome. My only complaint is that the resolution on the relationship between Craig and Mara didn't pan out the way I wanted. I really enjoyed this film. It's a wonderful mystery set to the majestic tone of Reznor's score. Mara is stellar and an absolutely fantastic female lead. I just love films like this where you sit back and take everything in; the characters, the tone, the photography, the conflicts. I have not seen the original nor am I familiar with the source material, but there is nothing bad I can really say about this film except the story itself is not as intriguing as the characters in Fincher's camera.

Craig is better as Blomkvist and Mara gives a new dimension to the complex character of Salander, but this remake lacks the thrills of the swedish version and it takes some awkward turns at some points, which would probably make it hard for some viewers to follow the story if they haven't read the novel or seen the original film. Fincher knows his handywork, but TGWtDT is far from superior to Oplev's swedish counterpart. Makes you wonder: Why make another version when the first was really good?

Unlike other franchises he was rumored to direct, a movie featuring a journalist and loner hacker driven to find a serial killer is perfect for David Fincher. The only missteps are a tv show ending (which sets up a series that never happened) and a misguided revenge rape sequence. Still, this deserves studying for film students, especially the fantastic mystery setup, cross cutting, methodical close-ups, and Trent Reznor's moody music. And bonus kudos for the creepy usage of Orinoco Flow.

Intense and gripping. The title sequence drew me in, and the film kept me intrigued even as it took the time to set up. But the time is well-spent; the character-based introduction and conclusion bookend a magnificent crime thriller that excites and horrifies as it unwinds the twisted plot. Featuring one of the best female characters I've seen in a while, this could quite possibly be Fincher's best work in over a decade.

"CAAAT!" I can't say I had high hopes for this, I just wasn't expecting it to be THIS average. I knew what my thoughts would be from the opening sequence, which is laughably silly. Naturally, nothing here is better than the book/Swedish film. The performances are uninspired (even Mara), the visuals are bland, the pacing is poor, the soundtrack is out of place and the entire thing is just watered down for American audiences. Starting off with one of the worst credits sequences in recent memory, it only gets worse, with some of the shittiest editing I've ever seen - every scene is way too short, with a quick-fire pace to the dialogue that worked for The Social Network but fails dismally here. Craig is dull and Fincher is clearly just a director-for-hire, putting no passion in whatsoever. The score is great, and Mara's performance is brilliant and brave, but they're completely wasted. See the Swedish version instead.

The story is problematic; it's somewhat middling and unoriginal, and pretty thin to boot. But Fincher's direction and Mara's performance as Lisbeth are so good that I can easily overlook the warts in the story. A lesser work by Fincher's standards (compared to Seven, Fight Club, Zodiac, and TSN anyway), but still a solid little mystery flick, visually handsome and with a commanding turn from Rooney Mara as the title character. Fincher succeeds at making the act of research more cinematic than it was in the Swedish version. The final act gets a bit draggy.

Madly, thrillingly entertaining. Improves vastly over its predecessor by pouring on the atmosphere and amping up the crackerjack tension. Basically, Fincher and Zaillian do everything right--first-rate character development, assured pacing, brisk and urgent plotting, all photographed in an appealing, enveloping icy-cold sheen. Craig has never been better, and Mara brings Lisbeth to life in a much more forceful, three-dimensional fashion than Rapace did. One of the year's best, and most fun.

Fincher made a film so similar to Oplev's version that it almost seemed an entirely redundant undertaking. Fincher's made the spoken language English, added a somewhat intrusive Trent Reznor soundtrack, and increased the color saturation, all of which I found detrimental. (Although far from the most harrowing event in the film, I didn't like the gratuitous animal killing either.) I can't say Fincher's lost his ability to hold one's attention, but I nevertheless greatly preferred Oplev's film.

Welcome back Fincher! The beautifully grim grays and an abrasive score highlight what Fincher brought with Zodiac and Se7en. Thankfully, the performances are solid with Mara being the strength in most of her scenes. She brings a slightly darker Lisbeth than what Rapace did. Still, I think the hype around the story is too much. An interesting narrative, but nothing to go crazy over.

Is in varying ways stronger in some departments and weaker in others when compared to its namesake. This results in an experience that is of similar quality to the original, although personally I'd give the original the edge. Finchers direction is slick, and Mara makes the character of Lisbeth her own. That said Craig's performance did nothing for me, and the central relationship between the two is a more intriguing affair in the original. The brilliant musical score is worthy of note though.

First, a horrible opening sequence that makes no sense with the rest of the film. Second, protagonist is not cool. It's stupid failed attempt at cool. Third, remember that feeling when the mystery unravels in Hitchcock's films? None of that here. Mystery solving is just not engaging and feels forced. Strong technical side (editing, cinematography, sound) is wasted on mediocricy.

Stieg Larsson's text is completely generic mystery-solving pulp. Detectives and serial killers are ground Fincher has tread before and while picking up this script was lazy on his part, he knows what to do with it. It looks slick. The good acting cushions some of the overly snappy dialogue. The fast pace helped keep me engaged, though its choppiness belies the writing's inanity. I would say the amount of talent at work here deserved a less trashy outlet.

(after repeat viewings) Snippets of Lisbeth's personal life feel disjointedly interspersed with Blomkvist's ongoing investigation, leading to an odd interjection of its misogynistic themes which the Swedish original had developed more strongly. It's smooth sailing, however, from the moment they meet; Mara is a stronger, more confident Lisbeth, yet every bit as vulnerable, extracting wit, spirit and pathos out of a Fincher's curiously detached yet (once again) technically superb direction.

Expertly made, visually precise and nail-bitingly tense, as it is to be expected from Fincher, the American take on Larsson's best-seller is powerful if ultimately redundant. Fincher doesn't do enough in order to set his own version of the story apart from the one presented in the excellent Swedish film and while the result is undoubtedly absorbing and visually striking, it remains, on the whole, disposable. Fincher tricks out this Swedish tale with Fincherisms: a hip, obtrusive soundtrack (Reznor), gorgeous chiaroscuro photography in sepia and gold (though frigid blue and white might be a better fit), and a fierce noir atmosphere featuring fast-paced dialogue in scenes that still seem to take forever. Craig is okay, Plummer and Skarsgard are fine, but Mara--unlike Rapace--yearns for us to like Lisbet just a little too much, and this mistake is fatal to the frightening integrity of the character.

While the narrative is too dependent on coincidence to be praised much, the gung-ho way it's presented is relatively intelligent and for Hollywood quite brave. A bit disappointing. It looks fantastic. Craig and Mara both put in good performances. But when compared to the Swedish version Lisbeth's character is horribly underdeveloped, and a few plot changes that might seem fairly minor actually add up to a major change in Lisbeth's role in the piece. It also doesn't help how amazing Noomi Rapace was in, let's face it, the title role. The changes to "The Girl" are too great and unwarranted to make this an equal to the original.

Sadly, most of the characters are pretty dull - Craig included - even for an island full of wacky relatives. The highlight here was certainly Mara's titular role. She plays the part to dislikeable perfection and portrays one of the most interesting lead characters to have surfaced in Hollywood for a while.

great stuff in here. awesome performance by Rooney Mara :o, awesome soundtrack, low-key yet equally awesome cinematogrophy...editing could've been more elegant though, at least I found it to be too rough in the dialogue scenes. that funny-accent-business did not bother me, which it otherwise always does, the digital look did not bother me, which it often does. one thing, that bothered me, though, was the shitty ending.

I felt something was wrong during the film, i imagend them speaking swedish, but from time to time i realized they talked english. It's very simlar to the swedish version of the film. I find both film really good, but something feels wrong in this one, and on the positive side, maybe Daniel Craig is a bit cooler than Michael Nyqvist :P

Mara was the wrong choice for the Salander role, and proves to be the weakest point in this remake. Pales in comparison with the Swedish film.

The American version has better visuals, but the Swedish version tells the overall story much, much better.

Like Fincher's Zodiac, this just didn't draw me in. I found the Swedish version to be superior, with its delicate balance between subtleness and rawness, and the deeper exploration of Liz's background -- in particular, I thought the 'new guardian' subplot was dealt with much better in the Swedish version. Craig is charming enough and Mara gives a great performance, but the chemistry between them was lacking.

I wanted to like it more but it really dragged in parts. Still a competent story and worth watching once.

David Fincher is in fine form here as far as the visual style and dark atmosphere. The script however falls somewhat short of the ambition. None of the performers are bad, but they don't stand out either. Especially against the masterclass performance from the scene chewing Rooney Mara. She wrecked the curve for the film with a performance that was not only Oscar worthy, but one to go down in history.

Compelling story, interesting protagonists, Fincher does a great job to tell the stories of both simultaneously without compromising the pacing. I feel the movie takes a sharp dip downwards once we find out whodunnit. Multiple false endings were also pretty irritating, towards the end I was just waiting for the movie to wrap up.

Fincher wasn't sent to this planet to waste his time or talent on pointless remakes.

Just goes to show, you can dress up bad material all you want, but if the dialogue sucks, there's only so much you can do. This is as good as it could be and still be considered an adaptation. Added: You know what, just buy the soundtrack and watch Hanna instead. Everybody wins.

This book sat on my shelf for months while I procrastinated on reading it for a multitude of irrelevant reasons, and for better or worse this film release beat me to it. The subject matter, as it ranges from brutal to intriguing to tense, is tailor made for Fincher. It's one of those movies you know is going to be good, probably great. You just know. You know as soon as it's announced. They'd have to try to make this suck. It doesn't suck. It's great. There's just too much hype for these books.

If Drive didn't exist, this would have been my favorite movie of 2011.

I haven't read the books, but this one goes on quite a bit longer than the original movie. It seemed to me like the story should have been over as soon as the big mystery was solved, but a lot more happens at the end of this movie, and I don't really see why it needs to. Maybe the idea is to show how all the main characters go on living in the end, but it seemed like a lot that could have been saved for the sequels we all know are coming.
