The Glass House

2001
Suspense/Thriller
1h 46m
When Ruby (Sobieski) and her younger brother Rhett's (Morgan) parents are killed in a car crash, their parents' best friends, Erin and Terry Glass (Lane, Skarsgård), become their guardians. Ruby and Rhett are promised a world of opulence and California fun -- all they have to do is move into the Glasses' gated house in picturesque Malibu. But in this taut psychological thriller, trust can be as transparent as The Glass House. (Columbia Pictures)

The Glass House is such a terrible example of how to make a thriller. There's just not a lot of originality here, and in a thriller that wants to keep you guessing, it fails when you're multiple steps ahead of it at every turn. There's really only one twist, and if you don't see it from the second time a specific character arrives, you're not paying close enough attention. It has a couple of thrills, but it wasn't going to work as soon as it was put on paper.

Beautifully shot, sympathetic protagonist, but OMG stupid plot. Very beautiful cinematography though. Gorgeous.

A very forgettable teenage horror movie that falls into my despised watered down "PG-13 Horror" zone.

Just ok thriller here. A great cast is wasted on a rather average story with some plot holes and predictable ending.

Could’ve been a lot better if they truly embraced their sleezy side that gets constant hints but in the end I still had fun. Lots of references that just hit the part of my brain in a child like way.

Would be a throw-away, except for the unbelievable cast who elevate this to a whole different level. I have no idea why these fine actors decided to make this film, but no one phones it in. A lot of fun, with a hilariously brainless ending.

Top badass moment? I was impressed by Ruby. She does a pretty awesome job of dealing with things, especially considering the circumstances, without turning into one of those ‘only exists in movies’ super-kids. But wow, she's going to need some serious therapy. It’s a touch melodramatic at times, but I rather enjoyed this shabby little thriller. A final thought: I’ve never lived in a glass house in Malibu, but I have drunk a lot of Malibu from a glass. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Servicable & creepy & vastly ignored & underrated. If you go in for this sort of thing, it's really quite good.

I remember the photography having this really cold, sterile veneer to it, and I remember some fuck-awful story, and that's it.

This movie attempts to be terrifying but succeeds only in showing greedy absurd people attempting to steal the inheritance from the children they are entrusted to raise. The plot is stupid and unconvincing, there is nothing very original or interesting, but the beautiful Leelee Sobieski makes it worth watching if you have nothing better to do.

Here's the thing ... this movie wants you to think it's about crazy, bad foster parents, but it's not. Skarsgård and Lane kind of predictably have more sinister intentions, but it makes absolutely none of their behavior make a lick of sense. This just a dreadful exercise is pointless suspense that never manages to make any sense out of it's own plot.

I have a soft spot for trashy domestic thrillers made between Reagan's election and the advent of social media, but this is very dull and predictable. The closest to signs of life are Diane Lane's heroin naps. And let me tell you, if you were expecting their title-pun surname of Glass to signify an intertextual structure that wryly comments on family dynamics in the work of J.D. Salinger, well, then you're in luck. That's the one thing the movie does right.

The film was bad, but as I recall the trailer was worse. It gave away every single plot point but the last. Remember kids, people who live in glass houses are assholes.
