it's a fairly well written movie, with likable actors and good performances. the best part here is the music and there's a whole lot of that. it may take some liberties on the story, but it's in all the right places. watch it if you like swing or stewart, either way, there's nothing to complain about.

Anthony Mann and Jimmy Stewart do their best, but June Allyson is cloying and the script is standard boilerplate biopic. (Besides, this wasn't even that good of a swing band. Listen to Jimmy Lunceford or Charlie Barnet instead!)

James Stewart and June Allyson are brilliantly cast in this charming, human biopic of the 40's bandleader. You can keep It's a Wonderful Life, for me this is Stewart at his best and Allyson is precise and believable in her characterisation. The music is brilliant with a bitter-sweet ending which is managed without overwhelming sentimentality. Well worth watching.

It's basically propaganda with cool jazz and a not so young anymore Jimmy S. The soundtrack is adding what the script can't - heart and liveliness.

Feel good film about a band leader, that's all sentimental with no substance. Jimmy Steward makes the movie watchable, but June Allyson performance is more caricature and leans to the ridiculous.

Made back in the day when biopics didn't have to include a bunch of negativity for "fairness" (or "reality" or whatever). The opening bit is a bit overdone on the aw-shucks hokiness -- how to distinguish between "Glenn Miller," George Bailey, and Elwood P. Dowd? -- but once the music starts, you can mostly forgive it (especially with those amazing cameos).

Just a delightful movie to watch, mostly because of the music and Jimmy Stewart. I'll admit, it's a bit hard to see Jimmy as Miller though, he's so distinctly himself... But it doesn't matter. There's so much charm, love, happiness, and bittersweet memories.

This pleasant biopic is a significant departure from Mann's earlier collaborations with Stewart, which typically involve plenty of action. With no conflict to speak of here, the film coasts smoothly on its star's immeasurable charm and exudes a rare kind of convivial warmth throughout, while boasting cameos from a number of legendary musicians, namely Gene Krupa, Ben Pollack and Louis Armstrong.
