The idea of 'kung food' seems pretty fun in theory, but The God of Cookery just isn't that entertaining. The characters are all kind of assholes and there is no real action to speak of.

This movie throws itself into the absurdity and over the top craziness of its concept almost completely, but there's also a very mean-spirited atmosphere. Most of the characters are complete jerks, and those that aren't are made the butt of some pretty mean jokes. It's a damn shame that the fun of its premise gets bogged down by these problems, though thankfully not out-weighing the positive elements, cause the rest of the movie is incredibly silly and enjoyable.

It's a shame that Stephen Chow doesn't enjoy as much international name recognition as other Asian director/actors. This film has some elements that are later repeated in his more successful films like Shaolin Soccer. The parts that didn't work for me are that this felt like too much of a cartoon and had many references that I didn't get. Some characters just disappeared for long stretches. Fav scenes: ambush turning into admiration of bouncy beef ball; split-screen Nancy Sit food reactions.

This is the same Stephen Chow of "Kung Fu Hustle" fame, but minus the brilliant digital visual effects. Still, solid, zany fun.

A Stephen Chow special. For my money, his best. This is ripe to be remade in to something much worse.

Why is Stephen Chow so hit and miss? Some of his work is hilarious, some of it godawful, this is somewhere in between
