Very solid melodrama from China in the early 30s. It stars Ruan Ling-yu, who died tragically young of suicide. This was made a year before her death. I was going to watch Center Stage, a biopic about her, so I watched this first, and she has a magnetic screen presence. It's a shame many of her films are lost. She has an often naturalistic style uncommon in silents. Very good.

Wonderful silent drama that is critical of its society without being preachy and has a great lead performance.The beats are bit stripped bare, as is usual for silents, which holds it back from true greatness.

Very conventional and kinda blunt story by modern standards but superbly constructed. Good economic visual style and excellent performances. All the subtlety in it is found in Linguy Ruan's performance. In terms of drama, it's still solid and pointed even if surprising plot twists are completely out of stock. Saw it with a beautiful live-accompaniment.
