The premise is amazing, so it's a bit painful to see how quickly the whole thing devolves into some Benny Hill-type slapstick mess with a high 'hyuck hyuck' factor. Still an interesting watch for the whole 'I'm seeing a comedy from 80's Botswana' factor.

Charmingly screwy little movie -- bringing Chaplin-style humor to a very unChaplinesque setting -- that somehow gained a massive worldwide cult following

An unassuming and charming comedy. N!xau and Marius Weyers play genuinely appealing leads.

This was a brilliant fish-out-of-water story, as well as an anthropological study of the disruptive powers of introduced technology.

Why do so many people think this movie is the funniest thing ever? The concept isn't terrible, and there's some interesting satire here, but it's buried under some of the most painfully unfunny 100 minutes ever described as a comedy.

Endearingly sweet natured comedy is a bit too much of a mixed hodge-podge at times, but keeps its grip thanks to charming performances from Weyers, Prinsloo and N!xau; they help guide the film through its messy, sometimes non-existent narrative (which dips into some surprisingly heavy handed moments of harsh violence). At its best alternating elaborate (hilarious) slapstick gags (harking back to Blake Edwards) with some softly-softly satire (courtesy of O'Byrne's wonderfully droll narration).

Vaguely entertaining comedy about an African bushman who finds a Coke bottle (which he believes comes from the Gods) that becomes the catalyst in an adventure of discovery. Lots of unoriginal fish out of water type comedy, but at least they hired an actual African bushman to play the role.

The parts of the movie involving the Bushman were fascinating and insightful, but the Benny Hill-esque physical comedy was strange and out of place.

Insensitive, simplistic and contains terrible slapstick comedy. And yet it still offers some interesting starting points for meditation on life and it's enjoyable enough for what it is.

The humor is so South African it hurts, it might not be for everyone, but those who understand its quirks and the absolute absurdity of its often over-the-top slapstick will have a great time. Wonderfully charismatic performances, the beauty of the African plains, and some stupid-funny jokes make it a timeless classic for many. Subtract twenty points if you aren't South African, but otherwise this film hits nearly all the right marks.

Mix between Herzogian nature film and postmodern Chaplin slapstick pastiche - except it's tedious and uninteresting to the maximum.

The movie is most interesting when it's making goofy scenarios out of the Bushman not understanding anything about the modern world and consistently misconstruing everything which not only can be funny but also interesting as an exploration of human nature. A lot of people feel this is undercut by the slapstick seen outside of that and narratively I somewhat agree, but the slapstick is charming and entertaining anyway so I can say that at least brought me some amusement.

I watched this because a professor brought it up in a Heidegger course. Apparently other professors have done the same. I have no fucking clue why, given that there are about a thousand better movies to reference when talking about the world as equipmental totality and all that shit.

This is one funny movie. A great mix of documentary and comedy, The Gods Must Be Crazy--though an insensitive look at tribal people--is a great movie.

The introduction of the tribal habits and their bottle conflict, with the introduction of the big city habits, are great (accurate or not, it's obvious that it's not the intention, as we know we don't take a car for 5 meters, we can realize tribal habits aren't accurate either). After that it loses too much and there's just some good moments here and there, with comedy elements that doesn't work enough and a critic element completely forgotten.

The initial setup is mildly clever, but also pretty hard to swallow and really quite patronizing. It's not hard to believe that people living essentially a hunter/gatherer existence in the Kalahari dessert don't have to compete for belongings, but the film tries to pass them off as sweet benevolent simpletons who have never known a minute of conflict before seeing a Coke bottle.

The first 15 minutes are fantastic, easily the best part, from there it descends into mostly goofy slapstick shenanigans, with the jeep/gate/hill schtick as a definite highlight. Our bushman hero is easily the most captivating role/performer, even though he has no dialogue. Fun for what it is.

When a pigmy finds a coke bottle and goes on a quest, it can only mean one thing: a comic adventure in Africa. I have good memories of this film, but there are a lot of other comedies around that do more justice to the genre.
