Back in 2009 when I reviewed the movie Middle Men, I made the claim that Luke Wilson can't act. I take that back. He's only in this for a short time but he is a GREAT scumbag. In a heavy drama, luckily it's the performances that really stand out here, as Elgort, Wolfhard, Wright, Fegley and Kidman are all really, really good. It won't stand out among my best for 2019, but it's solid storytelling and a worthwhile watch. This was my first John Crowley film, and I'd like to see more from him!

Better than I though it would be. If they had cut about 45 minutes off the run time it could have been a much better film.

They stripped down the book of all the context and left us with a mumbo jumbo of seemingly random selection of soapy trailer scenes

I went into this blind and I liked it. The biggest issue is that there's no satisfying payoff for all the flashbacks, character turmoil, reunions, etc. Offset by good acting even from bit players such as Luke Wilson and Sarah Paulson. The first half was quite unsettling but the second half was more dreamlike. Again, I would have loved more resolution such as with the rival art dealer. Didn't care for Boris' fake accent. Fav scene: young Theo leaving in a taxi pleading w/Boris to follow.

There are awful scenes here that justify the terrible critical reaction -- but there's also remarkable scenes that make you think it would've brought up its Tomatometer just that little bit. It's absolutely stuffed full of characters, though the ones with little screen-time make their purpose in this film seem highly questionable, but ones with more screen-time add to a fairly strong emotional resonance, particularly with some ambitious editing.

I've never read the book, and after seeing this adaptation I don't want to.

Interestingly unusual plot and good performances throughout.

A very mixed bag. There are moments where the characters and scenes feel very “impersonal”, for lack of a better word. The scenes in the present day drag a bit, and overall the film feels messy. It’s mildly entertaining in the past scenes, and the cast is pretty good. Not terrible, but it could’ve been good.

I have never read the book, so while many didn't like it as an adaptation, I have nothing to compare it to. Judging it solely as a movie. I quite enjoyed it, the acting is superb (aside from the bad Russian accent)

Seeing Finn Wolfhard try to play a rebellious teen from Russia was a bit surreal. Anyway, I dunno, I found this movie, at more than 2 and a half hours, pretty boring and it didn't seem like any of the storylines got wrapped up.

Most of the harsh criticism directed toward this film seems to stem from its failure as an adaptation. Oh well, I think it's a somewhat strained but moderately compelling depiction of deep, dark, angsty secrets.

A love of objects that just happen to have great financial value? Killing yourself because a painting isn't in a museum? An OK film but classist, and disappointingly and un-ironically treats art as an objective subject rooted in markets and museums.

An exceptional story which is only outdone by its superb cast. I've never read the book, so I don't understand the bulk of the film's criticism. But adaptations tend to receive all the same criticism in that they don't live up to the original. Maybe that's the case here, but I wouldn't know. From a mere filmmaking perspective there are no serious flaws. The performances, however, are so well crafted that all the other aspects of the film are rather secondary.

I remember watching the NYT Bestseller's list for weeks, as The Goldfinch stayed at the top. So, even though I didn't know what it was about, I was expecting good things from the film, but it's a very boring film, with a lot of flat performances, a jumbled plot, and a number of problems that are never resolved...there's' just no point to this movie.

As boring as Ansel Elgort is smug and annoying.
