The Good Fairy

The kind of film that just makes you happy. Sullavan absolutely charming with a generous naivete that would be unbearable in a lesser film. But here the writing is so good that it layers that wonderful happiness with a sarcastic undertone just strong enough to sting but light enough to allow the joy to prevail. Wyler does his part with the direction too, keeping all those elements balanced with great performances and a few wonderful shots.

Margaret Sullavan nails her role as a naive girl out to perform a good deed each day. Her performance makes this unrealistic character believable and lovable.

A sweet comedy as William Wyler directs his wife Margaret Sullavan close to perfection for such a clumsy romance story. Thankfully he doesn't push her in the spotlight too hard and gives almost too much time to the male leads Herbert Marshall & Frank Morgan to portray their peculiarities. But it's an enjoyable affair and their stupidities almost makes such a unrealistic scenario realistic.
