This movie is the perfect example of what Roger Ebert called the Idiot Plot, one where everything would be resolved in about 10 minutes if all the characters weren't idiots. But hey, we get to see Macaulay Culkin fall off a cliff, so there's that.

Macaulay Cuckin’ . I was fascinated with trying to piece together why Kit Culkin had a total diva shit fit to get his son into this bizarre movie and then at the end Macaulay is dropped off a cliff to his death and everything was clear.

Ahaha. You should see this movie just to hear Macaulay Culkin say "Don't fuck with me" to a young Elijah Wood who looks about to piss his pants. Also to see him shoot a dog with a crossbow. And cause a 20-car pileup by throwing a dummy off a bridge. In fact, pretty much every evil thing Culkin does is hilarious. At one point it's revealed that he almost certainly intentionally drowned a baby.

I'm torn on this one. It's poorly constructed because people should not be this stupid. But damn- if Macaulay Culkin can't play an evil kid.

The script is so amazingly horrible that it seems almost unfathomable that the movie could be made even worse by such terrible acting, but that's the truth of it. I was pleading - begging even - for this movie to be turned off. Ian McEwan, Elijah Wood, and Macaulay Culkin should all be hanged for the suffering they've caused. Crimes against humanity this severe shouldn't be dealt with lightly.

Macauley Culkin really showed his range here, so it's a shame he went a little batshit crazy due to his parents screwing him up so badly.

Ruben, hack director of '70s sexploitation, had a rather smooth transition to domestic thrillers. THE STEPFATHER perhaps inaugurated the profitable cycle that followed and remains one of the most memorable and effective (thank O'Quinn) but his every effort after was junkier than the last. And by design! Here he hired another hack behind McEwan's back to sand down all the pesky interesting edges. Criticisms of Culkin belong to the character's absurd construction. Wood really was a prodigy, though

Bravo to Culkin for taking this role. It is cute and frightening...but not something that deserves a re-watch. You get the point early on what the movie is going to be about and they should have taken advantage of Culkin and had him do some really really creepy things.

This movie feels kind of confusing, like it's trying to tell a different story than it's actually showing. There are some interesting elements here, because yes, it is always very creepy when kids are evil. It's just that Culkin plays a very stereotypic, 'just evil', type of a character and you're just kind of left waiting for the movie to shed some more light into his story. Weird 90's comedy soundtrack. Mediocre, but entertaining.

I kept asking myself questions like, "Why was this movie made?", "Who would possibly act like this?", "What parents would be this negligent?", and "Is this secretly a comedy?" It's a mess, but it's possible to get some unintentional laughs out of it, at least.

A sinister and creepy thriller haunted by the specter of death. The acting by both Elijah Wood and Macaulay Culkin are good and really gives this film it's center. The pacing ratchets up the tension slowly but consistently as we see Henry's psychosis explored. The music and cinematography add to this film without distracting from the film's focus on the kid's relationship.

Roger Ebert gave this film a half star and writes, "One of the reasons the movie feels so unwholesome is that Macaulay seems too young and innocent to play a character this malevolent." I wonder if Ebert had ever seen the house of horrors created by Kevin McCallister in Home Alone 2.

I can't decide whether I saw this as straight-up drama, or camp melodrama. But either way, I dug it. McEwan's script is solid stuff - he's probably better at novels than screenplays, it seems, but his work does the job here. Direction is competent, the performances are good.. and I really like the climactic, final ten minutes (which comprise an entire 50% of the Wikipedia plot synopsis!)
