Ha! Benjamin waited till after College to have an affair with the wife next door. My neighbor's wife was much older when we started, and I was fresh out of kindergarten. ... Wait what? OH GOD!! IT IS ALL COMING BACK!!

A deservedly iconic film. It effectively captures the awkard ambivalence, engulfing apathy, and aimless exuberance of youth. The matching of the classic soundtrack and the beautiful shots is incredible - I think this is possibly the best use of a soundtrack in film. The dialogue and acting are also both superb. I can't imagine anyone delivering performances better than Bancroft and Hoffman.

A flagship example of New Hollywood, successfully rejecting conventions and defining a generation without embracing counter-culture stereotypes. Ben Braddock is a compelling neurotic who works as everyman, played charmingly by Dustin Hoffman. It's masterfully directed, with expressive cinematography and memorable music. Just one great scene linked to another, emphasizing a tone and pace that reflects the aimless uncertainty so many young people can relate to. Not to mention it's also very funny.

I've never had such an ultimately frustrating cinema experience. While most of the movie is utterly perfect, Benjamin Braddock is just the most punchable character I've ever seen. He's either a moronic easily-manipulated sad sack, or a prick. Hoffman's stupid dopey voice didn't help either. But yeah everything else, the music, editing, etc, were all amazing. I just hated the main character so damned much.

It's a big experience when you get to see something as touching, innovative, funny and stylistically perfect as this. Hoffman is great in such a weird, unreal way, while momma Robinson has sex written all over her. On the thematic front it treats that everlasting (and repeatedly pictured) problem of growing up and having to find your path through life, and does so with excellence. Maybe because some of Dustins actions seem so dream-like at times.

Now I finally get the wedding scene from "Wayne's World 2"(1993), and the pool bit from "Old School"(2003), and all those sexy leg shots...and references in "The Simpsons". I don't know, but something makes me think this movie might have left a mark on pop culture over the years, or something. Well like with a lot of these 'classics', there's usually a good reason they were so impactful in the first place, and this surprisingly funny rom-com managed to reasonably live up to my high expectations.

It's amazing to me that the iconic awkwardness of the ending wasn't even supposed to be there, because if it weren't there, the end would suck balls. The whole elopement scenario was sort of ridiculous to begin with, and by lingering on Hoffman and Ross for just a little bit too long, the movie seems to acknowledge that. As for the other parts of the movie, yeah, they're great. Bancroft gives one of those once-in-a-lifetime performances and the Simon & Garfunkel soundtrack works brilliantly.

Never dull for a moment, filled with wonderfully funny moments, compelling plot developments, the lovely music of Simon & Garfunkel, terrific performances, and keen insight into the lives of people who are lost to themselves. Compulsively watchable from start to finish. Bold choices in the editing and music.

Another movie that I'd consider near perfectly constructed. Brilliant performances and use of music. It was released about ten years before I was born, but it seems to have captured the the growing disillusionment of the late '60s really well (I could be wrong though, since I wasn't there). By this time, the bloom was off the rose, so to speak. And the ending shot of Ross and Hoffman on the bus would definitely crack my Top 10 Endings of all time.

A film which truly personifies the personal struggle of one who is far past being a juvenile but has not yet settled upon his future as an adult. The spontaneity and honest actions of Hoffman's character are a true breath of fresh air. The plain and monotonous world which surrounds the character is portrayed so accurately, explaining his 'rebellious' behaviors. The pace of the film was simple perfection. I had no choice but to be emotionally engulfed in the happenings of the film... excellent.

well directed, with some great camerawork. spotty use of soundtrack that sometimes works great and sometimes baffles the viewer. i really dont know what to think about the hoff's character because it seems to me that he could have seriously been diagnosed with autism--maybe it's just a precursor to "rain man"

One of the earliest cringe comedies? Thematically strong and interestingly framed and edited, yet the characters - with the exception of Mrs. Robinson - are one dimensional. This ultimately makes it as apathetic and banal as its central characters, lessening any impact. The soundtrack (as repetitive as it is) is excellent, and there are some funny and iconic moments despite the problems. Ebert's re-review sums it up nicely - it's a good movie but its time has passed.

The plot is a little absurd, but it's the characters and their interaction that make this movie work. Nichols really has a knack for portraying human interaction and The Graduate is a prime example. There's some nice humor in there as well, and some very real situations amongst the less realistic overarching plot.

Brillant performances from everyone, especially Dustin Hoffman. The film perfectly captures Hoffman's, initially, awkward and aimless character. Throughout the film there are some absolutely iconic shots that have certainly set their mark in cinema. However I'm not going to lie, and I know I'm the minority, even though the soundtrack was great I felt that a bit too much time was spent on the musical segments resulting in a bit of dragging. Overall it's a very good film though.

Lots of fun to watch, the story was great and all of the characters are as well. The interactions between the characters in the first half are superb and really took the movie as a whole to the next level. There are loads of classic moments to be seen here, and rightfully so. My only real complaint is with the daughter's character, she's never fully fleshed out and everything about her situation is unbelievable because of this, it would have been near perfect had they given her more attention

I had fairly low expectations going into this film, but it's just brilliant. The comedic aspect of it stands up perfectly after all this time, but what stood out even more was how innovative and... well... perfect it is. I find it difficult to come up with one negative thing to say about this film. The beginning and the ending are both incredibly memorable. I was always aware of this movie, but I had no idea how excellent it was. It's brilliant. See it.

Quite a safe film, very far removed from its "rebellious" label; plus, if time has taken anything away from this film, its the film's youthful sprite that feels quite old today. Anyways, the film is vastly entertaining (better fun than most commercial features today), and the Simon & Garfunkel soundtrack remains awesome.

The first act, focusing on the relationship between Ben & Mrs. Robinson, is brilliant throughout and deserves its iconic status. So does the ending. The contrived middle act, about Ben & Elaine, does not hold up to re-examination. Nor does the "soundtrack," which is a great album on its own, and deserves to be famous for the music, but its use in the movie was more of a marketing decision than an artistic one, and in hindsight it shows.

It's a wonderfully awkward film, which is beautifully shot and acted, with a story that starts out great and gets better. The soundtrack is totally dominated by Simon & Garfunkel, which is to great effect, even if, like me, you're not the biggest fan. My only complaint is that Elaine's character was somewhat hollow, which detracted somewhat from the plausibility of the plot. Otherwise an entertaining film.

The perfect film? Hoffman's breakout role is still one of his most genius, and Anne Bancroft's Mrs. Robinson rivals him. Funny, charming, sad, and moving in equal measure, and in all the right spots. Iconic as Mrs. Robinson has become and how ingrained, parodied and homaged the film has been, there has yet to be a movie like the Graduate. A young man in a depressive state, aimless and overwhelmed the anxieties of his family is not really a new concept of a leading man. But rather than being a naval gazing drama about the consequences of an affair, there is a satirical humor to the whole movie and a rebellious energy imbued by Hoffman that makes his character so likeable.

What I believe to be cinematography at some of it's very best. The story of Benjamin reminds us that sometimes life doesn't turn out how we plan. Following Dustin Hoffman as a clueless recent graduate who has no idea what to do with his life, this movie hit home. Even though I've never had an affair with an older woman, only to fall in love with her daughter, the general idea of Benjamin(Hoffman) and his demeanor remind me of me. Watch the awkwardness he displays and general maturation of his character through out the series. Anne Bancroft as the infamous Mrs. Robinson is great as well, until she turns rather one dimensional in the end.

I thought this was a pretty charming movie and all but I feel I must defend my relatively low score. No complaints about the technical stuff; the directing / acting / cinematography were all fine, it's just... this was kind of corny and over the top, no? I mean, I sense the comedy and the film may be iconic and unique... but.. I dunno... It was no masterpiece. And what's with the same 3 S&G songs on repeat? My personal interpretations of them are different than the context they were used.

"The Graduate" is by no means a masterpiece, but remains a highly entertaining picture. The impact it has had on modern comedies is more than just astounding and, most important of all, that fact doesn't detract from its beauty - not one little bit. There's a remarkable number of subtly executed but nevertheless hilarious comedic moments and the whole film feels like an outrageous teenage comedy - yet, from a screenwriting and directorial aspect, a perfectly mature one. Wow.

You know that part very early on where Hoffman's character is unsure about just about everything? Yeah, that feeling's about the only thing his character, the movie and myself have in common. He's a creep, a prick, selfish, apathetic and destructive. All of these things would be much more bearable if the entire movie wasn't geared around us having to connect with this character. Mrs Robinson, Elaine, Mr Robinson, his parents, hell the guy at the boarding house are all more sympathetic.

It seemed a good time in my life to give this a viewing, given its title. The post-college anxiety of a young Benjamin is wonderfully portrayed, the first half of the movie is filled with memorable sequences (opening titles, scuba diving in the pool), and count me as a fan of the S&G songs, their narcotic haziness blends with the film in great harmony. But the relationship between Ben and Elaine doesn't feel warranted (despite its cynicism) and wasn't as well handled as Ben's with her mother.

Gets away with a wonderfully awkward 'twist' ending, if only because the preceding drama was entirely unfathomable. The 'taking a dive' metaphor kept getting stronger over the run-time. Emphatic use of color (blues and greens), layers of lighting, and inventive shot composition remain fresh after nearly fifty years. Conversely, the much-lauded Simon and Garfunkle soundtrack is very clearly a product of its time and comes across as cloying, but I'm sure it felt poignant back in the day.

A few uncomfortably stiff scenes (the initial seduction comes out of nowhere, and lacks authentic sensuality) and some puzzlingly unfounded plot points (see Benjamin's sudden love for Elaine-saved only by the uncertain ending) are mostly overshadowed by the film's unique blend of dry, awkward comedy (see the hotel lobby scenes), sexual drama, and melancholy coming-of-age fare, and its daringly creative cinematography (see the brilliant diving/hotel room montage and the classroom time lapse).

At the time of its release, somebody described this movie in the following way: “The Graduate is a movie about a Jewish boy with gentile parents”, quoted in Douglas Brode, The Films of Dustin Hoffman (Seacaucus, New Jersey: Citadel Press, 1983), p. 76, Brode adding that it was this “ironic casting” of Hoffman as a character who in Charles Webb’s novel is more of a “walking surfboard” that makes the film work. It’s an enjoyable film (though its many years since I saw it).
