The Grand Seduction is a great watch, assuming you have some sort of knowledge of what life is like in Canada -- and in particular, a small fishing village. If you don't, you might miss some of the jokes, but the filmmakers do a good enough job to absorb you in that sort of culture. It's funny, it's charming, it's sweet, and it's a lot of fun. Its actors do a great job, and even though it's rather long for a comedy, it never feels long. If anything, I wanted more.

A quirky, off-beat little comedy that, had it not been so charming, I don't think I would have enjoyed it nearly as much. There is plenty of fresh, understated comedy to be found, and at times, the characters (many of whom are not particularly well-crafted but don't necessarily NEED to be) walk a fine line between lovable cause-fighters and reprehensible liars. This is particularly true of Murray (Gleeson), who has some brilliant moments. The movie is unpolished, but undeniably captivating.

Quite good, we enjoyed it very much. One odd thing was the post office sign. Did Canada Post not allow the film makers to use an actual post office sign that one would see in Newfoundland? Seemed odd. This is a fun movie you can take you Mom to see, or maybe your Gran.

A remake of a Quebecker movie, okay in itself though it does not bring anything new beside putting different actors in and changing the location. Thanks for buying the idea I guess

I thought this was a lovely film - I liked the traditional music played, the silly (almost slightly farcical) storyline and the characters. There's plenty of heart and a nice feel of a close knitted community portrayed, quirky characters et al. I should say that, as the title may hint at, there are some somewhat saucy moments in this film but nothing overly raunchy I guess...still, it deserves the 12 rating I suppose. It is a little cheesy maybe but that isn't always a purely bad thing.

Pretty good beginning and end, but the mostly silly sit-comish middle was more than even Gleeson could salvage.

A fun movie: another remote town on the hustle to recruit a doctor by bending the truth a little. A good movie for a light Friday night.

Good but Gleeson is way better in dramas or black comedies.

The Grand Seduction was occasionally funny, but never as much as I wanted it to be. Gleeson is a terrific actor, but I just found his Irish accent over-bearing in this film. The film is a little longer than it perhaps should be, though it's entertaining throughout.

A humorous and authentic look at a small Newfoundland fishing village on the cusp of something big for the town. Very Canadian, very honest and very funny. This film is heart warming, despite the characters incessant need to lie for 3/4 of the film. Despite that flaw in their core set of characters, Gleeson and Pinsent found the heart of the Canadian spirit and helped propel this film into emotional territory. Kitsch is a good young actor, and he plays his part here well.

Pleasant, but no new ground broken here.
