The Great Commandment (1939)
Set in 30 AD, the story concerns the burgeoning Christian movement, and its effects on young Judean scholar named Joel (John Beal). A hotheaded reactionary, Joel spearheads an uprising against the Romans, but his warlike impulses melt away under the influence of Jesus of Nazareth. Joel even "turns the other cheek" when dealing with the warrior who murdered his brother. Director Irving Pichel later helmed such inspirational church-basement fare as 1952's Martin Luther and 1954's Day of Triumph. (allmovie.com)

Since this is a religious movie this is a little tiresome with all it's holiness. After a slow start it becomes more passionate as Jesus' presence is felt. What gives this that special feeling is the way they use Christ to deliver the message. His believers look straight into the camera as if they were face to face with Jesus talking to him with his miracles being performed right in front of us. This means something for those that are religious and it's a nice effect in way to tell the story.
