I... I... I'm not even going to try to explain it. Once, my brother and I wondered why we loved this movie, so we watched it again, and both came out of it saying, "God, why wouldn't we love this movie?! It's so great! Everything about it is so great!" I have seen this movie more times than I can count, and it holds up well.

An uproarously fun movie! If it weren't for Curtis' stiff acting, and Woods' annoying character, it would have gotten an even better score. Lemmon was spectacular. :)

A rare treat with the dastardly Jack Lemmon as a mustache twirling villain. His cartoon antics have no limits and is the standout fixture of this production. Edwards can be hit or miss and this is certainly one of his hits. Gets lost in itself for awhile on a side plot regarding a military coup (after its long running feminist side plot at a newspaper disappears never to be heard of again) but since it's all handled so well its idiocratic plot remains a pleasure rather than a bother. This is one of Blake Edwards' great 60s comedies. It has a terrific cast (Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Peter Falk etc.) but the most impressive performance comes from Jack Lemmon. He plays not only Professor Fate but a substantial dual role (a goofy crown prince from Potsdorf). Laugh out loud funny. The pie fight alone is worth the price of a rental.

Not as good as THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES, and quite a bit siller; still much fun to be had especially when Jack Lemmon is onscreen. I just love that Professor Fate and his house and all his gadgets. The middle section with Lemmon playing a dual role slows down the pace and dries up a lot of the laughs; but then Ross Martin makes a spectacular exit and we are off to the races once again.

Despite a ludicrous running time, Blake Edwards manages to cram three or four movies into one. One of Jack Lemmon's finest.

A silly Blake Edwards comedy that's too long for its own good, but that manages to maintain its sense of good will through the standout performance of Jack Lemmon and a series of funny gags. Lemmon is in fine form here, mugging for the camera, yes, but ever so interesting to watch. The pie fight was quite good, as was everything about Lemmon's dual role and the Siberian interlude. Everything else is window dressing (very nice in the case of Wood), but a film this long needs more pop throughout.

Few movies can make me laugh as hard as this. Great cast, especially Jack Lemmon who is absolutely perfect as Professor Fate.

I find it quite upsetting that Natalie Wood didn't do porn. Fuck she's dreamy.

if only lemmon and curtis' roles were switched we would have had a pretty good movie. it's a bit overly farcical and it pays off less than i would have liked, but only as much as i had expected.

Natalie Wood exudes sexiness in her inimitable role as a journalist-cum-suffragette; her willingness to participate in the slapstick gags makes the film. I love the cartoonish approach as well. But it runs WAY too long and the bloated Pottsdorf subplot thoroughly kills the momentum. The film needed a lot of trimming, but it still has plenty of entertainment for the patient. The screenplay also makes some interesting attempts at proto-feminism, which actually seem fairly progressive for 1965.

I love it when that fink Professor Fate is 'attacked' by a grumble of pugs.

In which a moustache-twirling Lemmon tries to go Spy vs Spy with Curtis three-quarters of the way around the world. The slapstick gets a little repetitive at times, and the sudden shift to The Prisoner of Zenda in the middle makes it feel a lot longer than it already is. But Lemmon (and Falk, for that matter) was clearly hamming it up throughout, and there are some decent stunts and sequences ... just not enough of them.
