Very little of Herbert's life story is incorporated in the screenplay (a closing title actually apologizes for the film's paucity of cold hard facts); instead, the writers allow the famed composer's works to speak for themselves. Fictional events of the life of composer Victor Herbert, where he ends up being over-shadowed by clichéd Hollywood love story between Allan Jones & Mary Martin who performers his already (by 1943) out-of-fashioned songs. Got 3 Oscar nominations, because the Oscars love these biographical releases, but it honestly didn't deserve any of them. It's a very forgettable experience, and is probable only worth it if you know who Susanna Foster is, and want to see her screen debut.
