After "In the Heat of the Night" won that Oscar, the race issue became a minor trend in Hollywood. "Great White Hope" reflects that Zeitgeist, without stumbling into ugly blaxploitation. It's not a very deep or insightful film, but the writing is solid, Martin Ritt's directing is good as always (except for the final fight scene, which just looks implausible), and Jones and (even more so) Jane Alexander turn out great performances.

Good film.

Ritt's direction is (as usual) workmanlike but dull, but Jones and Alexander's excellent performances make this worth seeing.
