Hi my name is Thomas and I like Shia LaBeouf. Choir: "HI THOMAS".

Another conventional family film by Disney which, surprisingly, isn't annoyingly repetitive. It doesn't avoid plot holes though, which are filled by predictable drama sequences. The finale was a major cliche, while the quarrel between father and son is a theme used in half (or all) of the genre's movies. On the other hand, it is watchable from the beginning to the end, features decent turns from LaBeouf, Koteas, Marcus and Flitter, and includes well-shot golf scenes (especially the title game).

Pretty much the average feel-good underdog sports movie lifted by Shia's charisma. But Paxton can't do much more than a by-the-manual Disney movie like any other of the last years, like Million Dollar Arm and so.

Though the movie obviously wants us to cheer for the young American player, it's hard not to root for the aging Vardon, too--the tested veteran who plays with class, poise and integrity even when his aristocratic patrons fail to exhibit the same traits. Such fierce competition between two honorable opponents stands in stark contrast to today's high-dollar, me-first world of celebrity athletes.

Despite all the underdog sports movie conventions, the likable cast and lush production values make The Greatest Game Ever Played a solid and uplifting tale.

Feel-good fluff that fails to leave much of an impression. Perfectly serviceable for motivational movie fans, or even golf fans.

Does heartwarming rather well. Heartwarming is usually just code for "takes the middle of the road to Feel-Good City", and that's about what we have here. Barely registers on the emotional richter scale.

I thought it was very well done, but it's a lot of golf to take in.

One of the first movies I've seen of Shia LaBeouf, and after watching this, I had a feeling he was going to make a name for himself.

Disney movies, in my personal opinion, are great and this one is right up there in that category. Took a while for me to get into it, but it is a tender movie.
