What The Greatest Showman lacks in good storytelling, it nearly makes up for with good music. It's far from being a good movie, but it does make for an entertaining one. Jackman is good as always, and all of the music is top-notch and generally well-placed and beneficial to the story; unfortunately, the film has no idea what character development is. I could not bring myself to care for these characters, making The Greatest Showman have very little substance with tons of visual style.

I can see the appeal everyone is getting from this. It's fairly charming and the cast is spectacular at times. Some characters stand out more than others and some of the songs didn't impress me much while others were really quite good. I went home singing a few of the songs so I think that says something. Some good directing and a good message. It's not in my favorite musicals ever but it is still a good time. If you do enjoy musicals this is worth the trip for sure!

The tunes are generally catchy, the performances solid (although Williams is wasted playing even more of a saint than Jackman), & no small amount of talent's been poured into making a spectacular. Unfortunately the script & the characters have all the depth of a 1940s Disney short. It's bizarre: EVERY song is designed to uplift & empower even though the characters are never allowed to feel bad for longer than 2 minutes. It's all highs. It always feels false & a quick google search shows it is.

It made my skin crawl. I get it’s got a nice central message, but I don’t need that message deep-throated down me with all the subtlety of a giant revisionist smegma dong. I hated everything about this, from its stupid CGI animals, its total lack of peril & non-existant structure, to the catastrophic screenplay & depressingly uninteresting choreography and songs. I’ve seen actual grown humans well-up talking about TGS, but it’s vacuous shite, & if that makes me a grumpy fucker, so be it.

This is so entertaining, I had great fun watching it. The problem is that it's not a very good movie, due to its poor plot. It's a shame too because the cast, the music and the production all hit their marks. In fact, the songs are very catchy and it almost makes you want to cheer and clap after each one. I dare say that this would play so well on stage, especially with a little more added depth in character development.

This is why people hate musicals. Egregious whitewashing of history aside, this movie is so sugary sweet without any real "conflict" to it. Barnum doesn't have an arc, Efron feels useless. The film looks visually great, but wow is the editing for this horrible - butchering so many musical numbers that makes the dance numbers feel forced and canned. And the music feels anachronistic, which isn't a bad thing, but they sound the same and are lazy in terms of music and lyrics.

You see a lot of SJW youtubers playing themselves, a lot of CGI animals, a lot of dance numbers, but what the hell they were actually doing during these shows between the opening and the finale? Because you won't see a single actual act.

As a biopic, it's an utter failure, but for musical buffs the song and dance are fairly well done. I could have cared less about Jackman and the dancing, but once Efron was introduced, I was in. It's been a week or two since I saw it and I can honestly say I don't remember any of the music, and for a musical, that's a mark of poor songwriting.

This had enough energy and color and verve and catchy tunes and fun choreography to pull me along enjoyably enough through it, despite some annoyances like “Will Hugh Jackman have an affair with this other lady?! ... No.” and the trials and tribulations of an interracial couple where the one is literally like three shades on a scale of 1-100 darker than the other lol.

Great fun whitewash of interesting, complex historical figure. Suceeds very well ON ITS OWN TERMS. Some catchy tunes & heart swelling, stirring scenes. Feel-good original musical entertainment in its pure form; Totally inoffensive & very enjoyable but no deeper than that. 5 leading actors attractive & likeable company.Hugh & Zac clearly having a blast. Hugh Jackman grins his way through the mildest show on Earth in THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, presenting a bland, uninspired version of a supposedly inspiring figure. What the film lacks in depth and personality, it tries to make up in razzle-dazzle. But the movie also fails the show-stopping talent of its cast, presenting a parade of derivative pop songs with schlocky, anodyne lyrics that would be right at home on a Rachel Platten record.

For about an hour, the film is almost a masterpiece, reminding of the Golden Age of light-as-a-feather musical entertainments - unfortunately the second half tries to clumsily 'get serious'; a noble idea, but the truncated running time means the social issues get short shrift (the emotional THIS IS ME is undermined when the film spends so little time on developing the circus people as individuals). However, it's well produced and superbly performed, with Jackman exceptional in the lead.

It's a good, old-fashioned musical, and it does just what good, old-fashioned musicals should do; it gets you dancing, if only in your own head, and it gets you smiling from ear to ear. It's joyous, unapologetically so, and far too few movies nowadays can genuinely claim that.

The Greatest Showman is a badly made movie masquerading behind catchy pop songs and impressive choreography. All the performances were good, but the direction of the film is befuddling. Anytime the plot attempts emotional resonance, a lightning-paced musical number pops up to remind the audience that they are in fact watching a musical. The tunes may be stuck in your head, but the songs are utterly forgettable. The film delivers spectacle, but at the expense of everything else.

Well, on the basis of Mark Kermodes ghastly review I shyed away from TGS for as long as I could before my partner insisted we watch it. So with the expectation of a turkey, so hideous it would not be out of place as a cast member of this film, I was pleasantly surprised that I REALLY enjoy this film. Yes, I know its not an accurate biopic. Yes, I know its as frothy as the top of your cappuccino, but it made me smile, the choreography and songs got my feet tapping and it got me googling Zendaya

Not quite what I expected. But if you know me (which you don't), you know I enjoy musicals, and this one did not disappoint. If you aren't big on musicals, this probably won't be for you. Some very powerful songs for which I wish I had seen this in the theater with a good sound system. I do wish it had a more cohesive plot or meaning, but despite this, it's still a fun movie. 4 stars - This is a good movie and I would recommend you watch it if you enjoy musicals.

An awfully flawed story, with almost any problem raised getting solved in nearly the next song. But oh man, is every song amazing. Not a bad song in the whole movie, which is rare for a musical. Every song is catching, great lyrics, and fantastic singing. Hugh Jackman pours his heart into a role that is shallow but showboasting. Yes, the character of P. T. Barnum deserved a hell of lot more stories about his actual life. Yes, the plot is thinner than Kate Moss on a coke bender. BUT as a "Moulin Rouge"-wannabe musical TGS works. Some of the most catchy songs I have heard in a musical for a long time. This feels like a musical that was written so Hugh Jackman will give it a rest... at least for a while... Nothing impressive, but a nice movie if your in ti the whole Lady Gaga, Freak Show vibe thing...

Basically an hour and 45 minute music video very loosely based on P.T. Barnum's life, The Greatest Showman has excellent production values and music (though often out of place modern music), but falls into the typical musical trap of having little plot, conflict, or character development. However, it's a fun show, and enjoyable to watch.

Atrocious. The amount of blatant, unashamed, simplistic and almost vulgar propaganda that was forced down my throat made me sick. It was as subtle as a flying elephant throughout, with the most simplistic, overtly obvious and infantile usage of songs I've come across in film, to name one aspect. And for crying out loud, if you're doing a musical with emphasis on a circus AT LEAST HAVE SOME PERFORMANCES IN THE FILM, for a starter, instead of a bunch of non-actors walking around in fancy wear.

Hugh Jackman as always brings so much charisma and the music for the most part is enjoyable and memorable throughout. But this is a poor piece of story telling that is horribly shot and edited and I struggled to care about the characters. However my children love it so what do I know.

While the plot isn't exactly amazing, the songwriting and the performances of Hugh Jackman make this film a stand out musical. It lacks the quality (and most probably budget) of Les Mis but far surpassed my expectations. Catchy songs with an upbeat yet somewhat under-explored plot. Whenever given the opportunity, Zendaya and Efron were brilliant, not enough made of their talents though. The scene with Jackman and Efron in the bar is a choreographic highlight.

Are there any problems in your life? Sing a song about it. The problem will immediately solve itself. That's the kind of story writing they are going for in this movie about the life of PT Barnum. But every time you want to complain about it to the movie, it just throws another spectacular performance or song sequence at you and you start humming along. Sure it's just distraction, but there are worse things in life than a big bland bedazzling circus movie.

A beautiful spectacle. In places, the editing, the transitions, the use of light and colour - particularly very clean silhouettes and shadows - is absolutely astonishing. The story seems to have suffered from several different "final edits", and the music is utterly forgettable and very boring, but the film's other elements are so great it genuinely makes up for it. By no means is this film stand-out as a musical, but its choreography, visuals, story and costume are all delightful.

This was disappointing, since some of my friends think this is great. But the story soooo cliché and the "freaks" are just the standard bearded lady and Siamese twin that we see in every movie. My greatest problem is with the songs. Having modern music in a period piece can work, but these are almost all standard power anthems about following your dreams yaddyyadda being bawled at the top of the singer's lungs and I can't remember a single one of them.

There's little more than a paper-thin plot to move the story along and the message of "acceptance" has been done better so many times. It's a well-produced, well-shot, and excellently choreographed movie about absolutely nothing. The characters are flat, the story is under-written, and the message, even without the incredibly revisionist attitude about Barnum's actual character, is about as pedestrian as it comes. There are far worse films but you can get a better experience just by listening to the soundtrack because that is the best part of the film.

Talented performers were clearly involved in the production of this very pop music musical, but the same cannot be said about the writing. The now familiar application of rapid-fire editing and computer-generated imagery may be an inevitability, but detracts and distracts from the singing and dancing more than it adds. Also, another in the line of sexless, rather infantile musicals that seem to have permanently overthrown the possibility of any real depiction of desire, seduction or romance.
