Watching the initial reactions to this movie has been interesting - it's clear that many people walked in expecting a rousing, crowd-pleasing swashbuckler and were shocked when they instead got a slow meditation on human weakness that ends on a (clearly infuriating to some) ambiguous note. I have a feeling this movie's stature will grow over time as viewers revisit it with adjusted expectations.

Apparently thinking this is good is an unpopular opinion. It definitely feels as long as it is, and the movie doesn't even attempt to spoon feed the viewer as to what's going on, but it's well acted enough and visually pleasing enough that I stuck with it to the end, and it has gotten even better the more I let it sit with me. The visual effects are splendid, and the costuming, production, and score really sell the setting and tone. A psychological trippy journey that's beautifully made.

There is much to love about this, and my few grievances only comes from my unrealistically high expectations, and how close this came to live up to them. It's gorgeous, dripping with atmosphere (and various liquids) but also low on meaningful character engagement and narratively janky at times. Regardless you get a feeling that Lowery got to make exactly the film he wanted, and that should be applauded.

This is like a Radiohead song. It's well-made, and I really like parts of it. But it is also slow-moving and dour to the point of parody. Oddly, I wanted this to either lean more into horror, or be even weirder. That one Medieval Lit course I took allowed me to lean over to my partner and say, "that's SIR Gaiwan."

"It's not the destination, it's the journey" - we nod and scroll but deep down know that's pretty much bullshit. Lowery's take on Gawain paradoxically provides Campbell's complete Hero's Journey, ticking all the boxes, but shows the journeying knight as generally unlikable and mostly a coward. This Gawain is not about finding himself, a true fool's errand, but finding absolution in a promise fulfilled. Here, we meet meaning not by sauntering towards it, but bowing humbly to it.

The Assassination of The Green Knight By The Coward Gawain is a good take on how to retell an old myth; make it loose enough around the edges that it doesn't tell ONE story, and leave the lead character as lost as the audience at times. The Green Knight is a visual feast, and if it drags now and then, at least you always have something to look at and listen to while you wait for G to get his act together.

This gets the full A24 treatment of weird noises and creepy scenes. Beautifully filmed, frustratingly vague and feels every bit as long as it is, but there is still something eerie and fascinating about it's determination to let its weirdness play out. I understand its a tough sell for a Gawain who is mostly bumbling, fearful and out of his element.

Don't know if it was a good thing or a bad thing that I hadn't read the source material (it had lurked on a shelf in my parents' house for years). I guess it was good to go in and enjoy it with no preconceptions, but some of it was a bit impenetrable (not necessarily a bad thing), so a bit more background might have been helpful. This is really good, through; well shot, well acted and likably weird. This reminds me my overall knowledge of Arthurian legend is pretty slim...might watch Excalibur.

Bewildering if you come in blind. Lowery is unafraid to make you work for it which is admirable but also made the movie difficult to parse. Dev Patel is great but his character does not invite engagement. Together, those two things made the movie hard to fall into. Lucky then that absolutely everything else about this movie is balls to the wall amazing. The cinematography feels both natural and metal as hell, setting a new standard. With time and some reading, this smells like a masterpiece.

Rarely have I seen a movie that can produce a worldview, a mindset that is as blunt and simultaneously coherent as The Green Knight. It's one of the best punk songs ever written, hidden in an opera. It has to do the legwork to get to its point because it's an emotional one, born out of intellect and rationality... but fundamentally it's a movie about that one lens we see the world through. And boy, what a spectacle it is in doing so... up to its final and Freudian triumph!

While "The Green Knight" has well produced film making elements, it's biggest fault had nothing to do with the film itself, the original marketing made this movie look like a horror movie. In reality, this movie is as faithful as possible for an adaptation of a medieval legend. Lowery makes no meaningful effort to modernize this story. It's a good one, not what I would have expected, but decent, even if Gawain's choices genuinely boggle the mind.

Gets off to sort of a bland start pre-quest, with more to chew on in acts two and three. Aside from the riveting final meeting, even those are hard to engage with in the moment (the visuals are great but the bizarre symbolism and plot movements are hard to wrap your head around), but looking back, it's impossible not to appreciate the poetic artistry of it all, from its thought-provoking take on the classic "hero's quest" story arc to its almost playful engagement with themes of time and honour.

Dev Patel kicks a can for two hours, then he runs out of road. An astute and timely examination of masculinity, agency, honor, and inadequacy. I enjoyed it, and the ending especially. The symbolism is oblique and suffocating, and some of the metaphors circle menacingly without ever landing. Normally that would be a complaint, but here it creates a thematically resonant backdrop for an aspiring hero who wants nothing more than to be comfortably hand-held past the consequences of his own inaction.

A hallucinogenic Icarian journey in pitch medieval black. So impressed with Lowery here -- especially his ability to re-contextualize and deconstruct the classic hero's quest. It is man's solipsistic struggle vs. nature's eternal indifference.

Score is based off the aesthetics alone. I think there are some story beats that don't evoke what I imagine is the intended reaction. Some of them have enough hypnotic beauty to overcome. Some distract from the otherwise entrancing experience. I think if the Lord and Lady's chapter were drastically improved, I'd feel significantly better about the film overall.

SPOILERS: I was on board as it progressed into a good coming of age, "young wannabe knight learns true decency" story, and then we get to the Lord and Lady's home. Unlike the legend, where Gawain maintains his honor and respect for the lady, here he gives into lust and from there it all spirals downhill. First it seems like we've transitioned into a cautionary tale, but then the story undoes itself to lead to...pretty much no resolution or payoff. Deconstruct Arthurian legends, but have a point!

I'm going to need to see this again to fully grapple with everything Lowery is trying to explore, but wow wow wow, this totally floored me. It's an intoxicating, hypnotic film that's also thrillingly weird and disquietingly chilling. The MVP is Daniel Hart and his incredible score. Hart has been doing fabulous work for Lowery since Ain't Them Bodies Saints, but I think this might be his very best. Gorgeous, disturbing, transfixing (often all at once).

It's a beautifully shot meditation on death without any obvious flaws, but... It, for some reason, never elevates itself among the greats. There's no real tension or suspense. Nor does one really empathize with any character. It's strangely separate and aloof. It's a philosophical object meant to be contemplated rather than a cinematic experience to be enjoyed or even felt. Ultimately, disappointing despite the striking visuals.

Like many A24 produced films that I've seen, it's a gorgeous, wonderfully directed film. Lowery deserves a lot of props here, and I really dug the ominous soundtrack. Unfortunately, it does meander some. I respect how it doesn't give a shit about explaining anything, but there are times where I had a hard time investing beyond appreciating the atmosphere. That's because the characters are just kind of there. But the artistic vision is enough for me to consider this great, ultimately.

The Green Knight enthralls your senses like no other Arthurian tale. Gorgeously shot sequences of reality dissolving into the surreal are rife with a semiotic texture that renders the characters almost monolithic. However, Patel and Vikander dominate when needed and deliver. Wanted to love it more, but couldn't for something I can't put my hand on.

Lacks a sort of deep resonance that would elevate the film from interesting+good to great, which is a really nebulous thing to say but whatever. The best way to explain this feeling that I can come up with is to say that the middle section of the film passes by instead of "happening", those middle tangents don't have a certain visceral thing that I think they needed or maybe we needed to sit inside those moments more or something.

While there is a good film in here, containing provocative subversions and an interesting coming-of-age arc, much of its mysticism is a tangle instead of a knot. An almost boring first act and the episodic weirdness of its middle mean the film is hard to appreciate until you're sitting with all of it, at which point it's hard to dislike. It's too dim - when there is light it looks great - and Harris and pixie Vikander give poor performances. A movie to sit with long after the credits.

Dream-like, deliberate, crafted and careful; The Green Knight takes an old Arthurian legend - concerned with the way reality will force principles into conflict with one another - and twists it a little into an almost medical examination of weakness in the face of tests to inward integrity. Impactful yet opaque, thematic yet stylistic.... good... but couldn't help shake the feeling that I was watching a film student production. (FYI - Due to certain scenes, awkward to watch in certain company ).

Takes its time and I appreciated that Patel’s Gawain is rather bumbling, far from fearless. Some of the interludes work wonderfully - hail Barry Keoghan’s scavenger - others, such as an overlong stay-over with Edgerton and Vikander are less effective, but this strange film has a haunting quality that is sustained throughout, and the ending hits home. I may be underrating this one a little - let’s see how it lingers.

Seems to have much in common with the 1990 book 'Iron John' by Robert Bly which explores emerging masculinity in youth through mythic primordial Jungian archetypes. It does have some fun with it on the way and (mostly) gets away with it, even with the dangers of making anything with this theme unironically post Monty Pythons Holy Grail.

A psychedelic adaptation that isn't afraid to subvert tropes OR take it's time in doing so. Be warned, if you aren't familiar with the Arthurian tale it's based on, it will not hold your hand as you hitch along for Gaiwan's seemingly idyllic tale. There is plenty to appreciate both visually and aurally, as well as Patel's authentic performance, but you can't help feeling lethargic as the film crawls by at a snail's pace. A respectable addition to the A24 catalogue, but it won't be for everyone.

It is visually very appealing and some CGI( particularly the fox and the Green Knight) are really commendable but if there is an underlying theme to it or a deep message it just washed past me. It can be a parable for the need for condoms in the Arthurian times for all I care, or can be defined as "A Hero's Journey with lots of filters and occasional awkward sex scenes"

Lowery fancies himself a modern day Cervantes with his interpretation of The Green Knight. Chivalry & valour are replaced by an unrelenting bleakness that feels less Arthurian tragedy and much more postmodern literary analysis. The film is almost all atmosphere, effective though often too dark, with the plot taking a backseat. Any sense of adventure is lost to themes of nihilism or the cruelty of man unto woman. The cast is good, though Vikander's accent is all over the place. Interesting, once!

It's a two hour movie that feels at least three. What fantasy should probably look like, were it real. The border of what you know should be scary, and the non-human should question gender and power. Not sure why I wouldn’t enjoy this movie, but I didn’t. A24 often reminds me of commercials - the way it was shot and its colours, the image sharp with depth of field akin to a professional instagram influencer’s video... it feels petty writing this but an otherwise interesting movie felt sterile. LOVED IT! Wow, really been hoping for a movie like this for ages. It was a magical journey, and I must say I really like the main actor. He goes through so many hard ordeals and finally finds the end of his quest. Made me think of the amazing fantasy movies like 'Never ending story', 'Willow' and 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen', but then with a darker turn :)

Requires some understanding of the original to fully grasp, but even if you don't manage to do that, it's pretty spectacular with it's visuals. Well done adaptation.

I loved the aesthetic, and that's all that matter to me for this movie.

I think I got half of the symbolism and mythology (if that), but fascinating nonetheless.

Could've been an interesting meditation on fate and all that, but really comes across as boring. Given that the ending is flat-out telegraphed in the beginning, you've really got to have more intrigue and surprise packed in the middle, and though this film has interesting and impressive moments, they all dissolve as the story continues on without them. It also just goes ahead and takes itself too seriously, despite clearly containing silliness.

Very Symbolic and unique!!! I have some problem with the screenplay , but maybe it is becouse of the lack of informaition about the story and its symbols!!!

This was like a poem on film. Gorgeous and unrelentingly assure of itself despite the webwork of the bizarre, the dark and beautiful, the deliberate and masterful pacing. This will absolutely not be for everyone but I was enchanted by this. One of the best of the year.

This movie creates an immersive and gorgeous world inside of an interpretive storyline and it’s great that way. It doesn’t spell anything out plainly for the viewer. But this is done in a way that is at the expense of the characters. It’s hard to tell this story which is basically a hero’s journey without a relationship to the hero. I liked so many aspects of it including the ambiguous ending but it felt like it was missing something… B-

Guess Lowery is slowly becoming the true contemporary master of beautiful boredom. This one has a promising start, but it's amazing how things just get one-perfect-shot-driven and narratively inert. Surrealism shouldn't be so overstuffed and poser.

Some good ideas, some not so good ideas. The budget has limitations but the film manages to create a memorable look and a feel, particularly the green knight himself.

A masterpiece. Absolutely stunning to watch and just let wash over you. Story of a knight struggling to live up to the tales of honour, courage and chivalry and failing miserably at almost every turn.

Great visuals, soundtrack and beard. That beard just looks fantastic. It's a formidable beard. Even better than the already great soundtrack. And the visuals, wow, beardly.

A visually stunning take on the old medieval poem. The choices Sir Gawain faces during the picture will take you on a really interesting, yet strange journey. This is probably something you will want to watch alone and let the art have its effect on your mind. My only major complaint is that the ending is very unsatisfying, so after an excellent experience I ended with a sour taste in my mouth. I can still recommend it if you are in the mood for a surreal movie about self-discovery.

I read the 1300s era anonymous poem the film was based on before watching this and it really opened the movie up for me. I absolutely loved it as a result. I got to talk about my experience on the "Ink to Film" podcast and compare the adaptation to the source!
