No idea what to make of this one, though I did appreciate the brilliant cinematography, and how much elegiac atmosphere it's able to evoke purely through lighting.

Late Truffaut is a thoughtful drama about the burden of death on the living and how one continues to honor and respect people after they are gone. The absence/presence question looms large, and a historical connection is forged in early scenes then later abandoned. The real problem is the ending, which is contrived and corny, but until that point it is a subtle and engrossing film with beautifully muted colours and an appropriately gloomy atmosphere courtesy of Almendros.

Traffaut breathes no life into this script and his character follows suit. It's not actually that often that I find subtitles a chore, but this movie does it.

Six years before death Truffaut--inspired by Henry James--created this simple, haunting film about the effect of the dead on the living. Truffaut stars as the morose man who has given up real life to minister to his private dead, and his affectless performance is perfect for the character. His direction is deceptively matter of fact, evoking the subtlety of the mature Bunuel and Chabrol. This film is a glimpse of the mature work he might have completed if he had not died so young..

Truffaut continues the trend of decent-but-underwhelming films from the latter half of his career. The subject matter is dark, but Truffaut seems to distance himself from it, there's a rather dry and uninvolved tone throughout. I don't know what happened to Truffaut in the early 70's, he just kind of lost his spark. Not that this is a bad movie, far from it... but it's hard not to contrast it with the earlier masterpieces and wish there was a little more oomph to it.
