When young Robert Shannon is orphaned he leaves his home in Ireland and travels to Langford, Scotland, home of his maternal grandparents. Growing up in the home of his penny-pinching grandfather is made bearable by his doting but irresponsible great-grandfather, loving grandmother and kind aunt and uncle. After a rocky start in his new school Robbie adjusts and is befriended by Gavin and Allison, whom he grows to love as the years pass.

As someone else said, it's a little bit of Good-bye Mr. Chips and Oliver Twist, but more forgettable than both. Not bad at all though. A fine cast. Scottish & Irish Catholics especially should like it.

Attempts the old orphan-boy-becomes-a-man epic, but creates mainly a long bore. There are all these emotional cliches applied, but none of the characters truly won me over, even if Charles Coburn overaly-bearded face almost did. The type of evergreen story that ether wins you over or won't.
