Richard Farnsworth is charismatic in this story about a stage coach robber who started robbing trains in the early 1900's. It is amazing to me that such a person has become famous for being a criminal, with mountains being named after him and that his legacy inspires such nostalgia. When in reality he was simply a armed robber with polite manners. The movie does a great job of detailing this career criminal's final years and exploits.

Farnsworth is the highlight, taking a decent but unspectacular script with an end of the west setting and filling is with humanity and complexity that makes up for all the cardboard performances that surround him.

From what I can gather, this is reasonably historically accurate (minus the romance). Farnsworth is pretty great. I couldn't escape the thought, though, that Matthew Cuthbert ends up hiding out at Green Gables to escape his shaded past.

In some ways a more artful and interesting model for THE OLD MAN & THE GUN, from a similar true yarn, but it never really comes alive. The most interesting thing might be how completely untouched it seems by the previous decade's developments down south: this isn't the fetishized primitivism of Hill or Milius, but a resolutely unfashionable pastoral, wanting for colour and lyricism. But like a schmuck I missed the 4K resto on its virtual tour and will shorely be giving it another shot on duh Blu
