The film's opening images rocked me to my core, deftly establishing a piercing portrait of a broken man amid a desolate world made up of ex-cons, fugitives, drifters,... dripping with existential misery. Makes you almost forget you paid 10 bucks to see a bunch of ravenous, CGI wolves as it slowly but surely descends into a mediocre, in order of ascending paycheck survival thriller. I could recommend the film based on the first 30 minutes alone but feel less enthused when considering the latter.

Truly a movie of the fray, wading between being an okay film and an absolute atrocity. It's a character study, without any study. The atmosphere and attempted nihilistic attitude set up such a strong metaphorical theme that is torn down piece by piece by the cringe-worthy dialogue, awkward pacing, and cornball emotional outbursts. The wolves not only look terrible, but behave in such an illogical manner that they might as well have been designed by J.J Abrams. Oh and then there's the ending.

This may be the best male oriented movie about men being men that we're ever going to get. No guns, no car chases, no muscular actors in sleeveless shirts posing for the camera. Just lots of men with beards crying in the snow. I've been waiting for this kind of movie my whole life. It's not perfect, but I find the fact that it refuses to indulge in any of those God awful action tropes so exciting.

I honestly thought this movie had a lot going for it but it continued to make stupid logical decisions. The wolves in general look bad, with few exceptions. The group whittles down slowly until the least interesting person is left with Neeson. My favourite scene was when one of the group decided to give up and Neeson just stood there without saying a word. The type of response he probably gave to the script.

Into the Wild except the plants are wolves. I'm sorry. That's so callous. Grizzly Man except the bears are wolves. That's somehow more callous. The Revenant except the bear is wolves. That's less callous but repetitive. The Edge except the...nope, repetitive again. Backcountry except...dammit. The Bear...Agh! Alive except the other passengers are wolves. NO! Castaway except Wilson is a wolf. Oh God. ... ... Unlike anything you've ever seen!

I like that part where Liam Neeson punches a wolf in the face. Wait, he doesn't? But he shoots one with a makeshift bow made out a fallen branch and a strand of woolly mammoth hair, right? No? Hides in a foxhole, waiting for one to come along before jumping out at the last minute and piercing its throat with a pine cone? No? Ruptures one's gut with a shotgun shell-tipped spear before decapitating it and cooking the body over a fire? Yes? Then, I believe the appropriate reaction is "fuck, yeah."

Seven men survive a plane crash in remote Alaska, only to be hunted down by a huge pack of wolves. I thought this was going to be a silly action flick about Liam Neeson punching wolves in the face, but it's actually much better than that. It's a gritty and desperate story of survival, man vs the savage elements, with several well written dramatic scenes that give real heft to the characters. Unlike the fodder in a slasher flick getting bumped off, every death in The Grey feels like it matters.

I definitely wasn't expecting a film of this caliber. The Grey is a gripping look at the mental, emotional, and physical tolls of survival endured by a group of men. The whole cast is admirable, but Neeson is absolutely domineering at the helm giving one of his best performances yet. The wolves could have been done better, but that is easily overlooked. A stellar ending finishes it off perfectly, solidifying The Grey as the first great film of 2012.

The beginning of the film promises so much and sets such a beautiful melancholic tone. Unfortunately it suffers from Hollywood ADD and becomes a cliche survival story of men versus nature. In some ways you can view this as a remake of Jaws. Another story of man vs nature vs his inner self. Liam Neeson doesn't wither at the camp quality of the setup but dives right into this role with emotional earnestness which is amazing considering the laughable cgi killer wolves. See it for Liam.

Refreshingly frank: that veneer of machismo that the marketing created is just as much discarded. The vistas are too stirring, the menace too acute, everything strikes the heart as the measure of value--what wolves mean to us that they don't mean, that they cannot mean as canines in the forest. Wolf-boxing.

I'm usually a sucker for these type of movies where a pack of survivors must, well survive, but The Grey is poor in a lot of ways - especially CGI-wise! What works is Neesons toughness and the once in while feeling of being truly frightened of ending up in a situation like this.

I expected a decent film, but found it to be something much more impressive. The Grey is an incredibly solid piece of work, and easily my favorite film of 2012 thus far. Neeson, whose performance here will undoubtedly be remembered as one of his very best, dazzles in a relatively unknown yet perfectly cast group of actors. Opens with the best plane crash scene I've ever seen and ends - sublimely - on an amazing note; A near-perfect, intelligent film about being alive, on this planet, now.

The plane crash was astounding. So what you get here is an artsy, introspective movie about a bunch of guys stuck in the cold being hunted by wolves. It's actually pretty terrifying sometimes, like listening to the wolves as the men stand in darkness with only a fire protecting them. It's pretty gruesome, doesn't bullshit, but is genuinely touching and emotional. It's shot beautifully and it sets it above your average Hollywood flick. Plus the ending is awesome.

Just another Hollywood confection filled with false earnestness, this one more lupo-centric than most, on the theme, I suppose, of attitudes towards mortality. Some pretty pictures. Note that this Tony Scott-produced film opens, like MAN ON FIRE, with a withdrawn protagonist contemplating suicide.

The beginning is pretty great, bringing the claustrophobic fear of the unknown that Alien and The Thing did so well. Unfortunately the third act abandons all subtlety to get to the ending it wants and brings down the film a bit. It's still very good overall featuring some truly great moments (plane crash was stellar).

Probably my favorite Neeson movie to date. I think any film that can capture suspense, mental and physical toll, and provide a solid narrative is rare. Given its snowy setting along with terrifying even if a bit unrealistic hunting pack of wolves, is just...works so well, and the ending is damn near perfect. Honestly I love this film. I don't find a lot of issues with it, aside from maybe a side character or two, and if that's all I can complain about, then whatever, fuck it.

A "smart" action flick insomuch as it talks about deep issues without ever saying much about them, The Grey is foremost a survival action film starring Liam Neeson and a bunch of CG wolves. The other characters get fleshed out in introspective monologues timed perfectly before they die to give meaning and emotional weight to their death. Despite the jumpy scares and cliche script, there are some genuinely great moments here; there's just too many ridiculous moments to overcome.

Decent movie it just overstays its welcome and drags out way too long at the end. Also the ending is incredibly unsatisfying and a cop out. The entire subplot with his wife or whatever she is was pointless and went nowhere but Neeson is once again a badass as we can expect by now. Probably the most resourceful actor of our times. It starts out really well and just progressively gets worse until you are checking the clock at the end.

i find myself in a bit of a conundrum here. basically, whats happening is all bullshit. the wolves' behavior, how the group fares in the wilderness and not to forget the rope-jump across a cliff with tied sweatshirts...yeah right. on the other hand i really liked the visual style and those quiet, subtle moments when neeson was thinking of his wife and such. it was shot nicely and somewhat gripping and gave depth to the otherwise forgettable characters. hard to judge, this one.

I don't want to live in a world where this movie was the "Liam Neeson punching wolves" flick that some people expected from the marketing instead of the film we got. The cast is uniformly amazing and this is probably the best performance I've seen from Liam Neeson. This is a tense, heavy film. It's not about wolves and it's not about punching them. It's a frank confrontation of death, and one that will stick with me for a long time.

What responsibility do we owe to the dead? What responsibility do we owe to those yet to die? How do we go on living while others around us die? Far more than a by-the-numbers survivalist film, The Grey is a surprisingly introspective look at our own mortality. It's a grim affair from beginning to bitter end, holding nothing back as it delivers its message: for all of our instincts to survive, none of us ultimately will.

I had thought this to be a promising movie, Neeson killing a bunch of wolves with their splattered blood, spilled profusely over a snow bank. The first half hour of this is, for lack of a better word, chilling. You genuinely believe Neeson is a broken man thanks to his emotional performance and the plane crash is one of the best scenes of its kind. Then it gives up. It's like a really talented crew shot an excellent short film and then Hollywood tacked on an extra hour and a half. The script is poor, the tension is non-existent and the CGI wolves look like they were pulled from Twilight. Still, Neeson DOES punch a wolf in the face.

"What'd it want?" "You!" Lots of exchanges like that to be found herein. The movie's stunning to look at, but monotony sets in pretty quickly once it becomes clear that all we're gonna be doing is following Neeson and five or six bland ciphers around in the woods for a few hours until they all die. The wolves basically function as horror movie psychos, leaping out of the dark when we all least expect it. And the character exchanges, when they do happen, are hokey in the extreme.

Wolves don't act like humans, but this movie depicts them like they do. Like the ending where they other wolves just let the alpha of the group fight alone. That doesn't happen. There are quite a few unrealistic things like that in the movie, like where did they get enough fabric to cross the cliff? And how did the fabric hold for two grown men? How did they not die after falling into the water in the middle of Alaska? Ignoring all the glaring plot holes, it's still not very good.

Sure, the wolves could've been more realistic but this isn't about wolves. This is a film about man vs the wild and his own inner demons, the wolves are just the vessel for the conflict. Really we haven't seen a movie like that in a while except Into the Wild. Thankfully instead of someone dying miles from a main road we have hard men being bad asses in the middle of nowhere with no one able to save them except themselves. Macho Liam Neeson survives a plane crash. By being macho he gets the survivors to follow his cunning survival plan, and they all end up dead. This in part is due to a pack of relentless werewolves who, in a strange final twist, did the decent thing and allowed him to look through his wallet (explaining why he was miserable) before fighting him Mano a Mano like, well, anything other than wolves. note to self: I must remember to tie my glasses on next time I abseil across a precipice in Alaska.

I like the beginning of cold and slow shots, and it gets conventional too soon -- everyone gets killed, Neeson struggles almost by himself --, but this is a survival flick with some guts and thrills: even with a bunch of boring CGI wolves, it's possible to be dragged into an enormous amount of (predictably) delicate choices and hard decisions, all of them depicted in pictures of complete isolation. These guys were used to be alone. And now they've got company: death.

So much is wrong with this movie. First off, alpha males are not a thing in wolf packs (google it), so the whole premise of the movie is off - but that's ok, I can suspend my disbelief for this. Secondly, the characters are all uninteresting. Thirdly, slow and quiet moments followed by gratuitous jumpscares are a weak last resort when a movie doesn't know how to properly keep you invested. On the flipside, the visuals are nice, and that plane crash scene at the start was very well done.

The Grey is a stomach-turner of a movie. It's haunting, intense, and manages to have something to say, while also working as a taut survival-thriller. The secondary characters get genuine personalities, meaning we care when they die, Liam Neeson continues to be a commanding presence, and it's a very compelling picture. It's too long, it gets predictable, and the wolves look pretty bad when we see them for extended periods, but the film on the whole is very good and well worth watching.

What works: the collapse of masculinity, the sadness, the acceptance, "I've stopped doing this world any real good." The man who protected the others from the 'beasts' thinks his position isn't worth it anymore, and it'd be a shit film if it convinced you that it was. But it doesn't. It lets everyone die. Intensely grim and somber survivalist film gives Neeson one of his best roles in the post-TAKEN era, which is all the more poignant when you consider the contemporaneous tragedy in his personal life. Takes its time (perhaps a little much) building its potential stock cast of characters in interesting ways, making the inevitable dispatches genuinely moving (Mulroney is a minor revelation here). The wolf pack taken literally or figuratively are perfect unthinking, unsentimental foils.

There's an absence in American cinema of the theme of hopelessness. And while this film plays a part in remedying this situation it's not the particularly savage tonic that the cinematic terrain needs before it's mercilessly torn apart. Aside from a few philosophical diversions (invoking the Christian God for help only to be met with silence) The Grey isn't much of an intelligent film. Liam Neeson is great as the grizzly veteran that once had a good life but lost it all and ended up in the hell that is Alaska. For a survival flick, the movie is fine. The characters are interesting enough, and how do you not find yourself engrossed in a plot like this even if you've seen it or read it fifty times? Great film. Has an artsy feel to it but is still packed with thrilling action and drama. The plane crash scene was terrific, and the ending (with the after-credits extra) was very satisfying. Liam Neeson drove the film.

Plenty of action here, sometimes slipping into slasher movie territory, but a tender and thoughtful movie at times too. I loved it. I'm looking forward to reading the novella by Ian MacKenzie Jeffers that the movie is based on.

A tale of survival in the Alaskan wild after an oil drilling team's plane crashes. Liam Neeson does a great job in this film as he uses his great poise to bring up morale with the survivors of this terrible ordeal. The movie is just a tad too long and can drag on in a few parts. The wolves that are hunting the crew are really awesome though especially with the great sound effects and their glowing eyes. This movie just makes you nervous and makes you feel very cold. A good one to watch in summer

Liam Neeson's performance is really, really good. Unfortunately I found that the movie fell pretty flat when addressing its main themes, and for some reason I can't help but blame Christianity.

I see what they were trying to do with this movie, I get it, I just didn't like it. It's based on a short story and they tried to capture that feeling with internal dialog, philosophic ramblings and gratuitous use of unneeded flashbacks. Neeson plays pretty much the same character he has since Star Wars. Everybody else is an arch type of an emotion to play out the drama. The worst part of all is that the landscape didn't look like Alaska and the wolves acted more like generic horror villains.

I hate stupid pointless movies where everyone dies.

Liam Neeson's performance is grippingly emotional. Unfortunately, wolves don't really work as portrayed and the philosophical themes aren't explored very well.
