Makes no good argument for its existence. Go watch the original cartoon again instead.

Well there must've been some magic / in that old silk hat they found / for when they put it on my head / I oh this isn't a Dr Seuss rhyme. This was pretty good, I am an idiot sucker for anything with a cute cartoon weiner dog doing butler stuff , mine can sometimes chew on a wall or destroy slippers. I HAVE A SLIPPER BUDGET. More like Dr. Seuss' "PapaWho went out for WhoSmokes Over a Year Ago" Mr Grinch rap was atrocious, but that's what happens when you waited too long for Leonard Cohen.

For a wholly unnecessary endeavor, this is done as well as you could ask for. Better than the live action version by a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole.

I hate Illumination. They're the worst, with their annoyingly below average movies, awful tone, music and script choices and lowest common denominator humor. This is the same. How can I help that it has the most adorablyest little kid character I've ever seen - actually the protagonist of this film - who teaches both the Grinch and I to be just a little less cynical. My heart, eyes and tearducts may have briefly welled up to thrice their size. Subpar but lovely. I'd watch a Cindy Lou franchise.

The theater I saw this in was half full, people laughed at all the silly little gags and whatnot, but the only time I laughed out loud, which was when Grinch merrily started singing "Dashing through the snow" as he was stealing X-mas, the whole theater fell silent, and I ended up being the dork. Seriously, wtf guys?

Suffers from the same thing as other feature-length versions: a brief story is stretched-out a little too far, and the main charm of its origin (Dr Suess' wordcraft) is therefore diluted. That said, there is some decent voicework, some funny moments and some very impressive bits of animation. The bairns liked it. Full disclosure: I was a bit hungover and nodded off for a few minutes, so I've boosted my score just in case I missed some gold.

If the rest of the film was as good as the snow effects this would be truly special. It’s festive and inoffensive enough for me to cut it some slack, but for whatever reason Illumination looked at the original material and decided ‘we probably should simply take out all the unique and interesting bits!’ Those snow effects tho....

{{ CHRISTMAS MOVIE MARATHON - DAY 7 }} I'll probably get slack for this, but this is the best iteration of the Grinch story! Better than the 1966 version...yeah I said it! I was never a big fan of Dr. Seuss, so it's a low bar to clear here. The town looked amazing, the colours popped, and you could actually feel the Christmas spirit flowing through Who-ville. The Grinch and Max were endearing, even while up to no good. Lose Pharrell and the trap Xmas songs and this gets a higher score.

Sumptuous visuals, great Christmas feel, and limited demand for actual investment means The Grinch may enter my rotation as a movie for the background of holiday get togethers. Pleasant, pretty, non-essential

The Grinch (2018) was all too sweet and adorable. Not a touch of nastiness about him. Even his crooked ways was cleaned up too much for anything more than a sweet and charming comedy, just like all main stream animation films being made these days. Good fun it was, but I wouldn't have minded an extra dimension to the stories and characters.

The bad: This is just the original TV special blown up and dragged out just long enough to make it feature length. The good: It's beautiful, provided plenty of laughs, and I really appreciated Cindy Lou as a character my kids could look up to. The in-between: I like Cumberbatch's Grinch voice, but I think he would have been more effective with his natural accent.

So, The Grinch is supposed to have a certain deep timbre, right? I thought that was why they cast Benedict Cumberbatch in the first place. But then they have Cumberbatch put on this weird nasal voice that doesn't sound like him at all? I guess first hearing the Grinch was when I checked out of this one.

What makes the original great is where this one is lacking. One wonders why they were adapting Dr. Seuss at all beyond the name recognition. Cumberbatch is more like a mildly irritated co-worker who needs a vacation. They cut the already short classic tune in half and butchered what little remained. Pharrell Williams's sparse narration will put you to sleep. The commendable aspects are the algorithms for fur and a bit more squash and stretch in the animation than a lot of CGI films bother to do.

It is fine. It also made a ton of money, so what do I know?

The most interesting thing about this movie is the inexplicable casting of Angela Lansbury as a one-off incidental character with one scene and maybe three lines. The new approach to the Max/Grinch relationship would be admirable if it had amounted to anything at all.

Some funny scenes, but as with the Ron Howard adaptation it suffers because there isn't much to adapt. The entire plot can be summed up in three sentences, so the rest is filler (In the book the filler was mostly cute rhymes and wordplay). I enjoyed the family invented as protagonists for this version of the film and the plot surrounding them, but even after adding that there was too much empty space to fill up by the film creators, and they end up with an awkwardly paced mess.

Illumination's Grinch suffers from the problem of just not being Seussian enough. Much of the charm of the original story and even the live-action adaptation are lost in this version. The Grinch is a less relatable character, the story is overlong and unnecessary in more than a few parts, and the filler is less interesting. My least favorite version of this story... by a longshot.

The decently enjoyable lightheartedness of the first two acts (pleasant animation and voicework provide some chuckle-worthy gags and fun sequences) grows by three sizes in the third as the Grinch's redemption arc is completed with a refreshing and poignant childlike straight-forwardness ("It was me. I stole your Christmas. I stole it because I thought it would fix something from the past. But it didn't"). Doesn't break any new ground but it sure broke my tear ducts wide open in the end.

Does some things better than Ron Howard's Grinch and some things not as well. The comparison probably isn't fair to the film, but there you have it. At this point in the remake game, one would hope for it to feel a little less uninspired. Illumination Entertainment manages to work in their form of comedy well and it makes for a funny and, at times, heartwarming film. Boris Karloff is still the GOAT.
