Until the 3rd act, this does a decent job of making viewers who aren't into romance novels forget they're watching a filmed version of one by focusing on historical elements, which is appropriate given the likeable cast. By the end, a great deal of eyerolling is likely to occur as it embraces every implausible trope of the genre. A bigger problem is having an ostensibly sympathetic character fall in love w/ someone we learn next to nothing about except that he serves under the worst human ever.

The worst kind of film; inert. Death by a thousand dull clichés.

This could have been a decent film but I'm yet again beside myself due to the film's marketing! IT. IS. NOT. A. ROMANCE. WHEN. THE. "APPOINTED". COUPLE. HAS. THREE. CONVERSATIONS. DURING. THE. WHOLE. GODDAMN. FILM. This is a historical drama that mainly focuses on a bright-eyed author backtracing the life of another woman who lived under the Nazi regime. The romantic life of the author is completely irrelevant to the main plot of the film. SO THIS DOES NOT QUALIFY AS A ROMANCE!

Not bad but it felt like a 'chick flick'.

A nice cozy watch. Full of hope and love and a suspicious Nazi love triangle.

W4E1P1S1V2M1A2R2. Tugs at the heartstrings, a stellar cast, and a nice dose of history, even if formulaic.

The Hallmark formula minus the Christmas theme and cocoa, but with added WW2 nostalgia and gin. Perhaps the History Channel would be interested in stealing this worthless template?

I wouldn't have gone out of my way to see this but I was at a loose end. I enjoyed it for many reasons; James is a very likeable heroine, Wilton shows her versatility (compare, say, to Afterlife), and the story is compelling. Unfortunately, it falls into the same old hackneyed "will they, wont they" formula of so many "romances" where our 2 star-crossed heroes end up chasing about, the slimeball reveals his true nature, to the detriment of what was an interesting drama about the nazi occupation

I liked it, but it was a predictable love story kind of movie. Lily James and Michiel Huisman have good onset chemistry that makes you "care" about their characters. The ex-boyfriend was too predictable to be of any real conflict to the plot.

The plot is alright, but the movie is ruined by the protagonist who comes off as incredibly prying and nosy. I don't understand why any of the locals tell her anything at all. Also, the romance feels very forced.

Nicely balances a decent yarn with the realities of occupation.

Mike Newell can make films like is in his sleep. Still works on its own (lazy) level.
