You never understand any character motivations so you're constantly left in the dark about what's going on. They use this concussion issue that Sean Penn has only for convenience. He finally caught up with the "bad guys"? Let's throw in a headache right here. He's fighting for his life against a physically weaker opponent? Things get blurry. They made it almost impossible to find any enjoyment. Even when that chick is naked they cut right before titties. It's like come on man give me something

Could they have made this more boring? At least the action is occasionally hard-hitting and solid.

More intelligent and well-crafted than most accept, with a silly plot -- former hitman returns just to find betrayal and the girl he loves sleeping with Javier Bardem (of course), dealing with a faceless power that uses mercenaries to blow things in Africa in order to get natural resources -- but simple, skillful set pieces (bathroom on fire with Penn and Jasmine leaving with white towels, the bomb disarming-rearming in the apartment, the final climax in a Gilbraltar rodeo.

I went and made a hot pocket, and missed Idris Elba. This film is dull, lazy and unnecessary.

Not a bad action movie. Penn looks like a cross between Stallone and Bono. When did that happen?

An action movie plot with a thriller movie pace. Far too little action especially bc morel directs great concussive action scenes. Penn sells his part well and becomes the only thing keeping the movie going when the plots too boring to not have constant firefights. Penns character having brain plaque to slow him down was stupid.

Sean Penn gives an unexpected excellent performance as a former black-ops soldier turned mercenary gunman. His past threatens his life and the lives of those close. Jasmine Trinca was intoxicating. Javier Bardem gave a somewhat uneven performance. Good action, intrigue, some hard hitting romantic issues, great scenery and several very tense gun battles. Entertaining and engaging plot and dialog. Music was well done. Overall much better than I had expected, but with a sugar coated ending.

Sean Penn is never really my first choice as a lead, but he's okay in this. I like Bardem, but he's starting to... either be type-cast or consciously choosing to play the same character constantly, hard to tell which. I can't quite call this a success -- it being not only overshadowed by "Run All Night", but falling victim to the age-old action dilemma of "when nothing's blowing up, this thing drags on", especially when it tries to get too political -- but it's certainly not a failure, either.

It was just so boring. Granted the acting was pretty good. Not too familiar with Penn but he was good, and Bardem was good while he was in it. But damn. The story has nothing interesting. There's some nice gore, but the ending is terrible. I can't, in good faith, recommend this one.

Oh, this is not good at all. Sad to see Elba appear in such a forgettable film. The script is bad, the performances likewise. Penn isnt born for leads as hes acting is very one sided and monotone.

It all feels as weary as the perpetually scowling Penn looks. Add in convoluted story machinations and a rote romance and there's really nothing about The Gunman or its characters to draw us in and make us care in the least. Which leaves us with little more than a string of slickly produced action sequences featuring broken bones, gushing wounds and blown-out foreheads (pluggedin.com)

I like the premise of the flick because it seems to have more going on than a typical action movie. However, it doesn't do well by its premise and just shoehorns in a message at he end. It tends to drag a little bit, but I did enjoy watching Penn kick some ass because the sequences were choreographed well. It ends up being a pretty forgettable action flick when all is said and done, but it was an okay time.

As far as the action movie go this is one of the best. Strong acting, very good fights and shootouts. What is a letdown is unecessary, not believable love story (even if Bardem was very good as a rejected lover) and really convolued/ridicolous screenplay (his health condition, bad guys seems rather stupid in trying to kill Penn). But as action movie its one of the best. Dont think too much watching this though.

A moderately enjoyable but easily forgettable action movie, The Gunman is the best of these sorts of things so far in 2015, but that's really not saying a whole lot. It's got some good action, it transforms Sean Penn into a believable action hero, and takes place in some pretty environments. Its plot is predictable and sidesteps anything of interest that it could have had to say, most of the supporting cast just comes and goes, and you'll forget about it shortly after it ends.

thriller, spy movie sort of but a very good movie about one-man-army, no-escape, sacrifice, its inspiring. The main person acts on time (in seconds). conveys thing clearly, is extremely careful - knows that if has to beat an ambush then if he has to do a thousand things to get there he should and he does.

Can't really go wrong with Sean Penn as a declining assassin being chased around by a international hitmen. Pretty good suspense film. At the same time it struggles to distinct itself from the bunch of other films in the same genre. The Gunman (2015) works if you want a little action and don't need anything out of the ordinary.

The only time you're interested in The Gunman is at the beginning and that's simply because you don't yet know where the story is going. Picking up steam it becomes increasingly obvious it's just another dull romp across Europe, using fancy shots of Barcelona et al in an unsuccessful attempt to mask the insomnia-curing crap in the script. Idris Elba is second-billed but must be on screen for about four minutes; the rest of the cast play their parts with an alarming level of intensity.

I always like Penn, which also was the main reason for me to give this a try. Unfortunately, Penn and the rest of this a-class cast, couldn't do anything about this boring mess. Bardem is starting to annoy me. He should stay clear for a while of these types of roles. We've seen this type of acting from him in both Skyfall, The Counselor and now this. *Bad
