The Hairdresser's Husband

Not my cup of tea.

It is kind of funny, but the humour is at the expense of the characters which goes against the tone of the film. It wants us to sympathize with these characters but that's hard to do when the film doesn't respect them and gives a very shallow view of them. It's never funny enough to justify it, though, so we're left in this boring middle ground with little emotional impact and sparse laughs amongst the tedium.

Almost fairytale-like, it succeeds in the difficult task of presenting an idyllic relationship well, never withdrawing to classic-scriptwriting conventions like say, conflict, except for the ending. Highly romantic, charming, and just the right amount eccentric.

If the film were more than 70 minutes long I could at least take satisfaction in having been bored through and through, completely, wholly and substantially. To bore one halfway and then just leave one hanging... well, that's just not gentlemanly, Mr Leconte.

Thank god it was short. I could barely stand it. Weirdly enough, Patrice Leconte directed one of my favorite films ever, Ridicule, a solid five. But I see he had no part in writing that, as he did here. Very telling.

Really sweet and unashamedly romantic little film. Worth seeing just to see Rochefort dancing.

Director Patrice Leconte hits all the right notes in this extraordinary study of sexual obsession. Rochefort and Galiena are magnificent. Engrossing and erotic.

Instantly makes my top ten of all-time great romantic films. The erotic is found in the longing and loving expressions as well as the warm and sunny--almost buttery--cinematography, the compositions, costumes and camera movements. The film is also charming and delightful, especially Rochefort and his dancing!--but also poignant.
