... and after the collective feminist screenwriting group had committed every single Freudian fear a woman could ever have to paper, Joanne was booed for suggesting that instead of a Sci-fi setting, the series could just be set in the contemporary Middle East. For fucks sake Joanne, think white and get serious!

YA oppression porn relying on the rare shocking scenes to keep us engaged during what is otherwise mostly boring because of poor pacing and flat characters

This undisguised piece of contemporary agitprop will inculcate gullible viewers with the idea that religious people in the USA are natural fascists eager to exterminate gays, install a militaristic state, put lower classes and women into serfdom, you name it.

It started really interesting, but then it went to shit. The first 2-3 episodes set up an interesting universe. The following 2-3 episodes went too heavy handed with political commentary instead of advancing the plot. And the remaining episodes had a pace so slow that it was painful to sit through and wait for things to happen. Made worse by the fact that the things that actually happen are silly, the plot goes into weird directions. I wanted to like it, but I'm done after one season.

If anyone wanted proof of liberal bias in the media see the way they've reacted to this, insisting it somehow parallels the world we live in now. These are the same people who would, rightly, mock the absurd scenarios in Atlas Shrugged. Only a left-wing extremist can imagine this is reflective of the way we live now (where a polarizing, serial-harasser prez lost the popular vote & you can lose your job for verbally offending anyone who isn't a white male). It's plodding feminist torture porn.

It is something really, really hard to watch; it sucks the joy of life out of you. But on the other hand, it was the most in-your-face and elaborate definition of religious fascism. For just this, it is a very important work. The characters are very well expanded, compared to the book which is not as deep as the series. The whole series is like the demonstration of Klein's shock and awe doctrine; it comes and hits you and while you are recovering from the concussion, it hits again. Serena Joy...

Its good but not great. The premise is very intriguing even though it's a bit Children of Men-ish,the acting is great and the directing and style are magnificent. That being said some episodes do drag, there are some cliche characters and situations and there is a lot of unnecessary backstory for secondary characters(The husband one was cool but it went on for too long).Despite all that it does have some great moments and episodes and a lot of that is down to Elizabeth Moss's brilliant performance.

I watched the first two episodes. Sensibility of a student film with a multi-million dollar budget. It's good thing for workers in the entertainment industry that there's millions of dollars sloshing around to produce middle-brow junk for the streaming services, I guess. I'm glad that the grips and production designers are getting steady work, but I worry about what will happen if the bubble bursts when Hulu's VC money runs out.

Very well made with excellent casting. I just couldn't get into it and no fault to its own. Not my style of entertainment/drama (show seems more geared towards feelers...or I enjoy boring films?).

As political allegory is facile, too heavy handed and ultimately unconvincing, not to say bonkers, but production sheen is captivating and it's good as entertainment if you can look past its shortcomings.

Good start but plagued by incessant needledrops and cheap dramatic tricks like the good ol' slowmotion giving it a daytime tv look with a sauce of prestige-tv on top. Not for me (anymore).

Very heavy-handed, although I'm not naive enough to think unlikely. Elisabeth moss is brilliant. Fred character is too shallow. Nick is not good. My favorite is Serina.

S1: 80ish, S2: 50ish, gave up two or three episodes into S3 (everything I've seen of or heard of post-S2 would be scored 10ish). S1 was extremely timely coming so soon after Trump's inauguration; coupled with being able to rely on the source material makes it seem like lightning in a bottle. Everything after that is a prime example of showrunners running a concept into the ground - June should have been executed twenty times over. If you stop at the end of S1 though it's great misery porn.

The most difficult thing to overcome while watching this, is how realistic is the setting, how close we are for this becoming the reality.

S01 - Outstanding. Visually amazing, the cast are great, especially Elisabeth Moss. Very true to the book, and starting to expand the story towards the end of the season. S02 - Very slight drop-off from first season. Off book, literally. Visually striking as ever, expanding view shows Gilead fraying. Elisabeth Moss is great again, and Yvonne Strahovski absolutely matches her.

Ispirato al libro della Atwood, ma se ne distacca parecchio approfondendo i personaggi ed aggiugendo dinamicità. La qualità non ne risente e ne esce fuori un bell'adattamento, vedremo come si svilupperà.

An amazing series of a dystopian future that is very relevant with the feminist struggles still had even today. There is not much to complain about other than a few small things I noticed. Those, however do not detract from how amazing this series is and I highly recommend watching it!

Sets up a great dystopia that bluntly critiques an extreme version of the world that some are pushing for. Beyond the world building, however, I grew a bit tired of the plot after the first couple seasons. I may go back and finish it one day, but I'm not dying to catch up for now.

An excellent first season regresses to the Hollywood mean once they ran out of source material. The hacky TV-drama-typical plot developments post-season 1 are tolerable, but the unexpected flattening of the characters is really rather disorienting. Like a less extreme version of what we saw in the latter stages of Game of Thrones (and pre-reboot) Twin Peaks. Even though it's not nearly as bad, knowing full well how bad TP and GoT got, it's hard to keep watching Season 2.

Dystopian fiction way too close to reality. Based on Margaret Atwood's novel with the same title, this series is frighteningly dark and beautiful. Season 2 is widely regarded as torture porn. But the harder it gets to watch, the more you need to pay attention to real life. As Atwood states, everything that happens in the defunct US has and is happening somewhere, including the USA.

This dystopian world extends far beyond the possible. Some excellent characters. The situations are atrocious, but silent hateful stares get tiresome. Most episodes are of breaking or broken women, snobbish elites, or jarring flashbacks but also the occasional moment of brilliance. The religious focus is easily the most obnoxious aspect and becomes nearly intolerable the deeper you get. Far too little revenge. Keep a finger on the skip forward button to overcome the sluggish camera.

☆ I see the intention of this series, and I think it's a really important and well-crafted concept. It's just a bit heavy in a way I don't really choose to pick up- especially as the seasons progress. I can't manage to finish this one. Sorry! ☆

I really liked the first season, initially rating it a 9/10; but I wasn't compelled to keep watching, so I'm revising my score downward. It can't be that good if I'm not interested in keeping going.

I can't say this is enjoyable to watch. It's very good; casting, acting, script, costuming, scenery, camera work; all amazing. It manages to stay true to the core of the book, while modernizing, expanding, and enriching the story & world. But it is so unrelentingly bleak. I keep watching, because it's so good, but it's more like watching a really well done holocaust documentary, than it is entertainment. Where Atwood pulled some punches with her novel's framing device, this pulls none.

The premise was interesting and some story lines were worth exploring, but everything is buried deep beneath cringe softcore porn, annoying plot twists and (mostly) bad casting. I gave up around the start of season four, which I consider a stoic achievement.
