Waste of potential. If this was played 100% straight people would be talking about it past this week. Give me Chinatown but some characters are muppets. It would actually be funny.

Showed all the best (and only) jokes in the trailer in order to reel in suckers like me. Well, it didn't work, seeing as I only watched it months later for free. Take that Jim Henson!!!!

I had a happytime shutting this off after about 40 minutes.

Not as bad as critics said, but it's a disappointment nonetheless, especially because it was a pet project of Henson's that spent a decade in development hell, yet it plays like an assignment made from a first draft. The promising idea of puppets living as second class citizens in a mock noirish universe is poorly developed, and the script lacks wit, trading on crude vulgarity that is rarely funny. McCarthy's presence is a net negative, and the credits kick in at 75 minutes: always a bad sign.

Lazy. Remove 3-4 scenes and you have a completely ordinary cop comedy below average.

They took a tacky film Based on a beloved childhood classic and turned it into a cheap comedy with bad sex jokes Melissa McCarthy continues to disgrace herself with every movie she makes (In my opinion)

There was enough in this that was funny to me that I'm not disappointed in it. I feel like a broken record here, but if you're a comedy, just make me laugh and send me on my way. This made me laugh, and sent me on my way! So what would I have to be upset about? A weak script? I'm laughing at the puppet dick jokes, I don't particularly care that there isn't an eloquent soliloquy attached to this strip club scene. Who would need that? Pardon the assumption, but stop taking yourself so seriously.

It just plays like a generic, lame R-rated noir buddy cop comedy, with puppet jokes. The biggest issue is that McCarthy was just not the right pick. They should've gone with somebody like Jane Lynch, who could've pulled off the grizzled, racist cop angle. Instead it just felt like McCarthy doing her shtick again. There are FAR worse movies in 2018 than The Happytime Murders. Before watching it, I honestly forgot it existed for months. I'm probably going to go back to forgetting it exists now.

The Happytime Murders aims to entertain solely through shock humour, but an over-saturation of failed attempts renders it a mediocre flop. There are a few laughs littered throughout the mock-noir archetype of a plot, but the story and characters fall flat. The best thing about it is it's forgettability.

Man...this had so much potential. The story itself is decent, but the rest hinges on: "Look! It's a Muppet! And it said [adult sex thing/a swear word/drug thing]!" There's some nuggets of great concepts in this, but it felt they double-downed on the R rating.

I wasn't asking for much, but this movie still managed not to deliver. There are a few mild chuckles to be had, but even the misfired jokes just don't come quickly enough. There is a distinction between cop thrillers with jokes (Beverly Hills Cop) and comedies that use cop thriller plots as flimsy string to hang rapid-fire gags on (The Naked Gun). The Happytime Murders should have been the second kind of movie instead of a bad example of the first kind.

Sure, the idea was better than it's execution, but come on! It's not as bad as folks wants it to be!

Honestly it just didn't have enough laughs for me to give it a pass, and I didn't find the movie especially exciting. With that said, there were a few good laughs, but like some others have said, it just feels like they expected this to be funny because it's puppets. I will allow some of that because to a certain extent puppets saying gross things IS funny, this had a little too much of it.

"If we take Roger Rabbit, go with a different kind of anthropomorphic medium, and up the raunchy factor, we're basically guaranteed a winner right?" WRONG. This movie does absolutely nothing new or entertaining with its premise or its genre. All we get is a lukewarm wow factor from seeing puppets swear, do drugs and offer themselves for sex. The story sucks, the acting sucks, and the whole concept feels like it's 20 years too late to be interesting.

I liked it. Noir-ish film that I wish leaned into that more. Crude humor was unnecessary though the movie didn't waste much time beyond those scenes. Great puppet work and great world-building. Tight plot. Fav scene: bantering between the two. Maybe better as a miniseries.

This concept could have been fire, but it was clear they pushed into production with a first-draft script and decided to piece everything together. McCarthy is wasted, the masterful puppeteering is all for naught, it's overall a very frustrating and boring experience only livened up by clever meta one-liners (which should never be the best part of a movie).

If you want to hear puppets swear, talk about sex and do drugs go watch the Kneehigh Park sketch from Chappelle's Show instead. It's infinitely funnier and more clever than this garbage.

The critics really tore into this one, but honestly this is no worse than every other unfunny, single-gimmick US comedy around. At least it has a bit of structure so you have a sense of when it will finally end.

I discovered the day after I saw this film that I laughed a lot harder telling someone else what’s in it than I did actually watching it. It appears to be hilarious in concept and even execution while awkward or grim in performance. Or something like that. Totally worth a free stream but I wouldn’t recommend paying movie theater prices for this. And keep the kids away!

One comedy movie where Melissa McCarthy didn't look like a complete idiot, she was partly one. Even it has a different and original concept, it wasn't fun. I don't recommend it.

A failure to get modest laughs out of a muppets-for-adults comedy starring Melissa McCarthy should be punished by instant expulsion from Hollywood, but cinema's so bad these days this'll probably earn a sequel instead. The genuine funny jokes are far too scarce to distract from the bore-a-minute murder mystery plot, and the whole thing feels lazy and undercooked. There are way less funny and much more irritating comedies out there than this, but few are as criminally dull.

Sporadically amusing comedy does disappointingly little with its potential bullseye comedy premise - outside of one very funny, thunderously crude gag involving a cow (so good it's repeated for the end titles), most of the comedy bits are tepid, one-joke misfires. The best sequence may be the brief McCarthy/Rudolph team-up; Rudolph brings this to life whenever she is on screen. Great puppeteer work, though the 'gag-reel' end credits arguably serve to undermine the film's impact.

Most of the human characters in this film don't really work for me. The actors try their best but the script is only funny a few times. Overall this film is an interesting misstep.

They kinda dropped the ball on this one. Someone thought that simply inserting puppets into a gritty LA setting would = funny. Needed more actual jokes rather than just trading insults which makes it very dry.

After initially looking forward to this, I was put off by the unanimously bad reviews. It's possible that this lowered my expectations so much that I half enjoyed it when I finally got around to giving it a chance. The humour is absolutely stupid but a few gags cause a smirk here and there. Certainly not the worst movie I've seen recently.

Maybe I haven't grown out of my juvenile sense of humour despite my delusions of class, for I found this so funny. In fact I laughed out loud more at this than at most of the American studio comedies I've seen over the last couple of years.
