I love that it isn't about a dysfunctional black family for once. Stenberg puts in a wonderful performance. It was incredibly emotional too many times to count. I like what it's saying, I like how it goes in hard on what it's trying to say. But it can be a little hokey, mostly in the bookends, but there were times where I thought it was going to give a more in-depth examination of issues we know of but it kind of cheaps out. But it's based on a YA novel so I guess that's understandable.

I was impressed with this movie. It provides a deeper than usual look into black culture and the black lives matter movement. It is full of tense moments, and edgy situations. It has a few obvious flaws, but they are easily overlooked by the overwhelming amount of impactful movie moments. Amandla Stenberg was quite enjoyable as the lead character. The characters felt genuine. The story with lots of highs and lows offers plenty of entertaining moments. Well worth watching.

Powerful, incendiary (and timely) drama tackles a multitude of perspectives (problematic and otherwise) on race relations, centring on a stunning lead performance from Stenberg, charting a gradual, eye-opening radicalisation; all performances are terrific though, with Hornsby's stoic, authoritative father and a chilling Mackie as crime boss standing out. Arguably falters a little at the too-neat finale, but it can't cancel out the thought-provoking (and emotional) material that leads up to it.

A powerful, emotional film that's a great racial politics conversation starter.

Powerful adaptation of the book of the same name There were a few changes from book to script but for the most part stayed true to the book and the obvious changes just made the film better (in my opinion) Great writing, superb performances just a great movie all around !

Mixes racial injustice / police brutality commentary and some sort of stuff with gangs and drug dealers and YA teen drama into a whole that’s sort of unwieldy but decently watchable. Amandla Stenberg is very good in the lead role. Like essentially all films or shows with some sort of lefty POV it’s paralyzed with inability to write a character who disagrees with the film or main character’s argument as anything but an eye-rolling strawman villain saying clownish shit no one actually says

The film tackles a variety of timely racial topics, at times effectively and at times with too little subtlety. The acting varies between a very strong lead performance and many weaker supporting players, which unfortunately undercuts some critical moments.

It actually helps you understand how a young black person gets politicized or how street protests begin, how people become angry a lot better than Blackkklansman. But you can take a film with dialogue such as "I've got color on the inside, where it counts" seriously only so much...

It wasn't made for me, but I liked it enough to realize how well it must work for its intended audience. Overlong, but very good as a whole.

rvw. mostly a 90 with her life, the shooting, and her in the aftermath. but the gang leader shit was a lil too extra at times. and the ending with her lil bro too. and the white stupidity was good but they shoulda had some smart whites lool. and she shouldnt have been illogical when they were right. like the cop should be killed but his life DOES matter lol and his fam getting death threats. like no you're not gonna stop it by standing in the way, you have to change THEIR system so you need them

An important and powerful subject matter--but the film itself at times almost seems to present the characters as caricatures, and the acting and dialogue, unfortunately, left a lot to be desired all around...

This film tackles a lot of different racial issues through out and is lead by an incredible performance from Amandla Stenberg. It continues to raise the stakes as the film progresses to the ultimate clash of two worlds near the end. The family that is trying to be honest and the world of drugs and violence serves as the opposing forces of this film. The ultimate message of this film is to never let fear stop you from doing the right thing. A very honest and emotional film. A must watch.

I support Black Lives Matter but this movie felt crafted to teach kids how to be woke more than to tell a powerful story and it was the worse for it. Scene after scene felt created to teach you how to respond to questions about a police shooting victims moral character, how to reply to an "all lives matter" person, how to treat tear gas symptoms after throwing a canister back at the police in a riot, etc. There was some nuance added in the portrayal of gangs but not enough to redeem it for me.

Black Lives Matter inspired YA book turned into YA movie. Teenagers are dealing with some serious shit these days. When I was 16, American Pie came out, and I don't think 'social issue' movies for teens even existed. It's not a bad film. The situations are uncertain, and it doesn't doesn't preach. So it definitely works as a discussion starter, which is primary function it serves. On the other hand, I found the plot generic, and this way to elicit emotions doesn't work for me.

I really really loved the book and this is a very faithful and mostly competent adaptation, but the direction seemed a bit bland like something was missing. My money's on the studios trying to not make it *too* political or make it more approachable and such, when the book had force because it was so political and raw. Amandla is really great as Starr though.

While it does lack subtlety, The Hate U Give's ability to tackle well over a dozen issues and a profound central message make it a powerful film. Amandla Stenberg delivers a powerhouse performance that punches far above her experience, and the rest of the cast supports her well. Despite the somewhat plain direction from George Tillman Jr., the film is still a powerful piece on wokeness and anti-racism, proving that young adult adaptations can say more than one might think.

Generally, I think it's a rewarding film and Sternberg's character is richly drawn. but there are so many characters and stray plotlines in the film that a lot of supporting characters are quite thin.

I don't want to be that person, but the book handled this a whole lot better. The acting is top notch and it moves on swiftly, but some of the stuff they changed from the book made it less powerful.
