Typical Guy Maddin. Looks like it's supposed to be a 2-hour long re-imagining of Lang's Metropolis, preserving the 1920's technology and with maybe a drop of sensationalism added for flavor. No doubt for practical reasons (but thankfully), it is condensed into a mere trailer-like short. A purely aesthetic experiment, well made at that, but I must say I'm starting to get a little bit annoyed by this sort of soulless kitsch.

Utterly pointless, but a pretty entertaining 6 minutes.

Hectic, somewhat nostalgic, always interesting, kind of stupid.

Breathtaking. Raw aggression meets poetic inclination - and funny on top of it all! Pure, just pure cinema.

Why people love it so much, just because looks like a movie from 20's, Metropolis or something?

Youtube.

It's nice and enjoyable and a quick, fun sum-of-its-parts pastiche. It's never anything more.

Short's over before you know it. It's really fast and has an interesting and bizarre idea. Not amazing but definitely a nice tribute to another era.

Guy Maddin is better at shorts than full-length films. This is my favorite short film.

Pure Guy Maddin. It isn't long enough to stretch out his themes into something a bit more complex like in his best long-form work, but it's still compelling and interesting.

Bizarre, funny little throwback short that feels like it came right out of 1918. It's like the artist only more interesting and only 6 minutes long.

A delightfully masturbatory in-joke. Despite being a parody, it is, in a way, far more effective than what it mocks. The "Thick as a Brick" of film, I guess.

The guns of the Potemkin blasting kino at everybody are pretty fuckin' funny as is the evil industrialist Nosferatu. It all goes by so fast you'd have to watch it a dozen times to catch all the sight gags and references that I'm sure are in here.

I didn't care much for the ham-fisted metaphors but its use of imagery and hectic editing at least maintained my interest. Especially since they utilize the silent eras motifs fairly effectively.
