WWII, in a British disciplinary camp located in the Libyan desert. Prisoners are persecuted by Staff Sergeant Williams, who made them climb again and again, under the heavy sun, an artificial hill built right in the middle of the camp. Harris is a more human and compassionate guard, but the chief, S.M. Wilson, refuses to disown his subordinate Williams. One day, five new prisoners arrive. Each of them will deal in a different way with the authority and Williams' ferocity. (imdb)

Lumet's confronting military prison drama contains exquisite direction that is matched by uniformly brilliant performances. From the beautiful opening extended crane shot to the intense hand held barking close-ups, this is a joy to behold. Lumet's talent for extracting amazing performances give us Connery's best. Davis, Bannen, Hendry also shine, though Andrews outpaces them all. The striking scenes of dissent and masterfully choreographed extras almost as memorable as the dynamite finish.

I suppose running up and down a manmade dune under the blistering North African sun builds both stamina and character--qualities necessary for admittance to the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

An starkly realistic war/prison drama from one of America's finest filmmakers, jaw-droppingly directed and acted. The tension builds exponentially to create a prolonged, ever-escalating, gut-wrenching climax.

The story is simple, the setting is singular, the performances are good to great, but it is Lumet's direction that is other worldly. He does things with the camera that must have seemed crazy in 1965. The perfect close ups and early use of hand-helds are just a few of the tools he uses to make this story a true terror.

Lumet REALLY knows how to end a film. This film is about how the people upstairs try to break us, typical people, and turn into hard-working and obeying machines. Fight the system Mr. Connery!!!

Sidney Lumet has now directed two films I would call perfect in every technical detail. The narrative didn't completely have me hooked in early on but just wait, just wait.

Like the hill itself, this slowly trudges its way up as it gradually introduces each character, repetitively, yet importantly showing their physical endurance being pushed, before reaching a dramatic height, and then falls down the other side of the hill, hurtling faster and more ruggedly towards a climatic stand-off involving the exchanges of arguments and fists.Tremendous powerhouse acting (particularly Davis' slightly more fun contribution) make this all the more gut-punching.

Some '60s 'anti-system' Marxist undertones yet an interesting and intense prison drama well executed for the most part with some memorable performances.

A gripping, intense film with fine performances from all, especially Connery and Andrews.

Powerful. One problem: British actors bark at each other and much dialogue is unintelligible to American ears (though if you can make it through the first reel, hang on).

An astonishingly powerful drama shot in striking black and white by Oswald Morris and adapted by Ray Rigby from his own play. Connery established himself as a serious, dramatic actor with this film. Ossie Davis and Roy Kinnear play 2 of the other prisoners.

Sean Connery in one of the great performances. Dark, difficult and perfectly made. Connery was 100/100 here. Watching this subtle, moving, perfect performance, I can help but think of where Connery could have been without the double-edged sword of James Bond.
