A new take on Wes Craven's 1977 film of the same name, The Hills Have Eyes is the story of a family road trip that goes terrifyingly awry when the travelers become stranded in a government atomic zone. Miles from nowhere, the Carters soon realize the seemingly uninhabited wasteland is actually the breeding ground of a blood-thirst mutant family -- and they are the prey. (Fox Searchlight)

There's just a special magic about the original film and 70's horror in general This movie just didn't capture that I found the ending a bit confusing and I felt like this was all about big bloody gore scenes and shock value

The parts I didn't like about the original have been improved slightly in this version. Sure, it's grimy as hell and wallows in its own sadism and filth, but it works for this simple but uncomfortable story. It's not high art, but effective enough as a remake.

One might argue it offers a critique of the government's careless approach to the environment but this is over and done with after the opening credits finish. From there it's merely a shock fest of an obscene nature. Violence and brutality for the sake of violence and brutality. By the end I didn't want to watch it, not because I found the violence offensive but because I found the entire film done in very poor taste. This is exploitation, not art.

I question anyone's intelligence who rated this higher than a 50. Really people? How were you not laughing your ass off at the zombie rape? STUPID, cliched, and embarassing to cinema. This is also one of the only movies I have ever walked out on. lol @ kumples dropping scores below 50 after reading this, noobs.

Alexandre Aja succeeds where other remakes fail, and that is making it better then the original. It is a joyous relief to have this picture around to make up for cravens 1977 mistake. it has a little humor, alot of suspense and gore, and even a serious gross factor. Could have done without the rape scene though!

The Hills Have Eyes is a solid horror movie that, unfortunately, falls apart in its final act. It's still worth a watch though, as it has a bunch of scares, a solid build-up, as well as being an effective horror movie that mostly takes place during the day, a rarity. I had a good time with it, even if its well-developed characters did end up annoying me more than I'd like.

I have massive respect Alexandre Aja. His films aren't groundbreaking or original but they're always highly entertaining, loyal to the source material and, best of all, he never resorts to CGI (quite the opposite infact, his practical effects team need more recognition). Not quite as good as 'Piranha' but good enough.

Weak characterisation and unconvincing motivation do not help this remake (of Hooper's TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, before anything else) that starts slow, then gives away the horror in favour of a (still gory) battle between regular folk and "others", in which, somewhat bizarrely, at least as much gore is perpetrated by the protagonist family, and in which a "Democrat" learns to shoot and kill (and thus to become a man). The surviving members are united in triumph and grief. Not for me.

I’m not the biggest fan of this franchise due to some of it’s nihilistic freedom it takes on sexual exploitation, just not my thing. However, I do respect that it’s disturbing elements are way more effective than you see traditional horror slashers. While I don’t think the characters are a home run by any means, they do great at showing the emotional toll and effects that these actions have. I have a weird sort of distant respect for this, but I can never bring myself to watch it again.

Often amazing take on 70s horror not so much because of its graphic violence, but how the film gets to it: a white family led by a conservative, pro-gun old man is destroyed by their mutant counterpart and it is the democrat, anti-gun who has to handle weapons in order to get his baby and save the day. Actually, nothing is saved, because this is all about American families eating each other. No escape, no possibility of redemption. The fact that Aja does all that without being fatalist is a joy.

I've not seen the original, so I can't judge it in that context. It's all just shock value anyway. I hate the way the family is so wholesome, but they throw in an occasional "fuck" or reference to weed to give it a false edge.

The film's score is incongruously, crudely triumphant as one man discovers machismo necessary to rescue his infant daughter and wipe out an entire family, possibly community - so much so that it cannot be an accident, but reflects a decision to dip out of the conventions of post-Texas Chainsaw horror and into outright glorification of...well, something violent and reactionary. And thus the film is vintage Craven, probably the most overrated horror director of all time, in this case producing.

In all things considered, probably the best horror remake of the decade, unless I'm forgetting something. Very finely directed. The cinematography is stellar. Make-up effects are thoroughly realistic and gruesome. The entire film is not at all a bad achievement. If anything, aside from a few "Oh come on,"-style plot holes, the film's only real drawback is that at times, it's nearly too difficult to even watch. One of the most brutal films I've ever seen.

So deep is my disdain for the 00's wave of remakes to my favorite horror classics, it took years until I gave this a chance. The original is Wes Craven's only great movie, and one of the finest horror movies of all time. The remake - actually not as bad as I had expected. It is pretty tense and gory, but suffers from the ills of most 00's fair: Exaggeration, realism spoiled by over-stylization, and the addition of politics ("you made us what we've become" - give me a break).

Not really all that scary, but I was entertained all the same. You're kind of expecting the bad guys to be a little bit more effective with their killing, but they are not not and it takes a lot away from actually making this movie suspenseful. I do like myself a little bit of cannibal desert horror, though, so for the mood and trope I give this movie points. Also, it's always nice when the nerdy person proves effective against all expectations.

Unrelenting and brutal. Up there with Zombie's Halloween 2 in its ability to be a major studio horror schlock film and still crush you in its hopelessness for the characters. The scene at night at the gas station is a standout for really showing Aja's eye for directing.

A fair enough remake of/improvement on the original film by Wes Craven, The Hills Have Eyes delivers enough "boo" type scares combined with some gruesome visuals to put together a coherent enough story for a slasher flick.

This film is one of the few films in which the premise reviews itself. THHE is a mutant, a throwback to the devastation caused by the original film decades ago. Since then it has reproduced with itself in the form of the sequel to the film, that this is a remake of (??) and evolved in disfigured ways, using varying sources including YouTube, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3far9oHZOsI) Rob Zombie films and the usual slasher cliche's. The end product being a spluttering genetic catastrophe.
