OK for its time, less so now. An odd combination of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Straw Dogs, Home Alone, and Weekend at Bernie's. The "mutants" look like average trailer park residents. Most intelligent character was the dog.

?The hills are alive, with the sound of barking/ The dogs seem to sense something terrible/ The hills fill my heart with such immense menace/ Now one of the dogs has run into them/ One of us goes to find where the dog got off to but they've been gone for awhile/ Now our camper is locked and there's a struggle inside, I hope they don't take our baby/ I go to the hills to retrieve my baby/ I know I will stop these cannibals/ This rattlesnake will distract this cannibal/ And I'll stab some more.

Probably the most I've ever been emotionally invested in a movie dog since maybe "Air Bud"(1997), and there ain't nothing in the rules that says I can't be more invested in the dog subplot of "Beast" getting revenge for "Beauty," than these assholes trying to save a baby from being eaten by cannibals. However despite being a bit spotty overall, Wes Craven's creepy cannibal tale generally makes for a solid 70's horror film.

Curiously inferior to Aja's remake -- which is way more shocking and unnerving -- but this is either way a crude, often gripping horror about families destroying themselves -- eventually, the mid-class, white, straight, going-to-LA ones become more violent and evil than the savages that managed to strike first. Deep America about how the "worst" or the "best" of the country are not actually that far from each other.

Not as disturbingly creepy as I'd hoped, mainly because of the rather lackluster antagonists. Awesome dog though.

A nasty piece of suspense/horror from Wes Craven. The remake had better gore, but for tension and creepy atmosphere, the original is by far the better flick. Plus, Michael Berryman is just too sexy.

It feels very cheap and sometimes dumb but at the same time the cinematography and editing are great, the characters are likable, the soundtrack is excellent, the writing is gracefully campy, the frames are meticulous and the minimalistic compositions are perfect. All of these make "The Hills Have Eyes" scary (sometimes even intense) and artistically beautiful. The villains could've been creepier, though.

I really liked the idea behind this film. But the execution was a little forgettable. Still, it's worth seeing.

A solidly creepy horror film. Frankly, anything set in rural or deserted areas is terrifying to me. And did you know that Michael Berryman (you know, the freaky guy on the movie cover) was a florist before he started acting in films? How horrifying. I love him.

I'm pretty sure the remake was better. This one was just too much of a B-movie for me. I like the concept and I think it's a scary idea, one that's pulled off far better in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. There was some nice atmosphere and Wes Craven offers some great shots, but everything else lets it down. Chiefly, the acting - it's fairly poor all around. And especially in the case of the villains - I didn't find them scary at all. In fact, I found them quite goofy and embarrassing.

Honestly, as a horror movie these days, it's not very scary. The acting is horrible, but the setting is great and it's got some of those wild 70's vibes that you're either going to love or hate. A lot of my enjoyment of this film came from the mood of this particular era. Plus Beast the dog is the real hero here, we all know that.

Builds on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre template, its main weakness are the unthreatening inbred mutant villains. If you had the equivalent of Leatherface running around rather than off-kilter comic relief it'd be a lot stronger.

It has some positives in a script with potential and tempered violence which shocks without being unbearable. But the production values, particularly the acting, are rather bad, the characters are annoying and a lot of the intended tension becomes tedium.

The story of the Carter family's fight for survival against a clan of mutant cannibals is as unflinching as horror films get; it's a story where no one is safe and the brutality is unleashed on both sides of the coin. I mean, there's a moment where the surviving children use their dead mother for bait in an effort to lure the killers to their doom. Ghastly and grim storytelling all-around and time has been very kind to it.

Dated, and more comical than horrific. And there's some atrocious acting; take particular note of the mum's eyebrow antics and the younger son's breakdown. My eyes were in real danger of rolling themselves out of my head. #1001Movies #WhyFFS?

The hills may have eyes but my eyes wanted to look at something other than this film after watching this for a while. The biggest thing that hit me in this film was the quality of the sound and picture. Yes, it is an older movie and the technology wasn't there but I just felt like some lines were lost due to bad sound quality. I did like the folks hiding in the hills, they were kind of scary, but it was hard to root for the good guys as they were all pretty lame...

Neither Craven's best or worst effort, T.H.H.E falls somewhere in the lower middle of his filmography. The raw style works for the material, and some effort is made to establish the isolation of the family, far on the outskirts of civil society, who are really out of their element, but this is low rent junk that spins its wheels quickly after its harrowing scenario has been established. It's disturbing to a degree, and Berryman is magnificently ugly, but it has been done better elsewhere.

The best of Craven's early low-budget epics and the movie that launched screen monster man Berryman. Craven's sharp sense of suspense and his willingness to go "too far" help overcome a slender story line and uneven cast.

I love Wes Craven's work. The Hills Have Eyes had the premise, but the execution just wasn't completely there. The innovative nature of some of his other films is just lacking here. It isn't bad, it just verges on boring at times.

Generally incredibly stupid, but with a level of gratuitousness that I more than appreciate, and a unique atmospheric template that set the tempo for other (better) horror films to come that similarly pit well-to-do citizens against unfamiliar territory and their inhabitants, such as 2015's 'Bone Tomahawk.'

For every good thing in this movie, there are three bad things to make you say, "wellllll,". Characters act stupidly to further the plot in aggravating directions, they aren't enjoyable to watch as the victims, and the dog does more work than all the humans. The dog turning into jesus knocked off 50 points for wasting my time. LOL

Miles ahead of Last House on the Left in about every way, it's still just as gritty & uncomfortable as that movie- but for the right reasons. A simple but effective premise combine with simple but endearing characters & simple but easy to hate villains to create a very simple horror flick that, despite that simplicity, is perfectly fine for what it is. Nothing about it is great in any way, but it does have some fun moments & some clever ones too. It's a classic for a reason, & is worth seeing.

Overwrought horror from Craven. There's somehing making me go back to this again and again... It shifts between being intense, corny, ridiculous and... Alot of other things. But it's constanly moody and there's a somewhat dry humour to be found in this unsteady film. It's charming in its own perverse way.

There is undeniable tension here but it comes off as more of a thriller than a horror. It's probably because the b-movie nature surfaces far too often in the poor extras and the lackluster "eyes."
