With a cast and source material this good this movie should have been amazing. As it stands, however, the special effects, sets and costumes are fantastic but the very reason the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is great, the humor, is just completely flat. Throughout the entire film you'll find yourself thinking "that should have been funny" or "that should have been funnier.' The film simply lacks any real spark and ends up being painfully mediocre.

Attempts the improbable ( Adams' novels are not literature in a classic sense, they are more of a collection of Pytonic sketches) and falls apart...not miserably though. There are parts laughable on their own. As they start jumping with the probability engine they all turn into crafted dolls in a stop motion animation for a moment. That is a great idea on its own.

A resounding disappointment. Adams' humor simply doesn't translate to the big screen, particularly not compressed down to two hours. The casting was very good and the sets and effects were fine. It simply felt lifeless and dull. Hearing someone say "Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal" out loud just isn't the same as reading it on the page. Stick with the books.

It suffers without Douglas Adams' hilarious narration, and it deviates from the book in places, but the movie still does enough right to be worth the watch. It has its laughs, and the cast is uniformly good. It just never lives up to the potential of the franchise, but that's not to say it isn't fine entertainment in its own right. I love the Improbability Drive sequence, I love Rickman's robot voice-work, and Freeman and Mos Def have fun chemistry. As you can probably guess, it has its moments.

Pretty disappointing. The radio series and (to an extent) the TV series prove that Adams' material can work in more forms than just on the page, but something got lost in the transition here. The movie seemed to rush through many classic bits -- such as the bulldozer scene at the beginning -- and most of the stuff that was added for the movie was lackluster. I wasn't too fond of the casting either, although Marvin worked well.

Could have been better, the animated sequences with Stephen Fry's narration were the only really great parts. Replacing Mos Def with someone else probably would have helped.

So it wasn't super accurate to the book, but so what! You can always just read the book! This was an entertaining film, and that's all that really matters. It's got the main point of the book down, and for those who have seen the old BBC film, there are a number of nice bonuses added to this one. Really good!

Has some very good moments, but is not as funny or charming as the book. The biggest problems in my eyes were the unsuccessful attempts to meld British comedy with American sensibilities.

Pretty good for a Sci Fi comedy; although many of the jokes are annoying or overplayed. I thought this film would be better if they slowed it down some and made it a little longer; it seemed like they tried to fit to big of a film in its 109 minutes. Sam Rockwell is awesome by the way.

If judged on its own merits, it would probably be a pretty watchable and pretty enjoyable film. Compared with the original material, though, it's a travesty. Listen to the radio series, watch the TV series, read the books: whatever you do, though, avoid the film.

There are two ways to review this movie: as a comedy film and as an adaptation of the book. As a comedy, it was terrible: I laughed maybe four times during the film. As an apatation, it is soul-destroying. Every version of Hitchhiker is different, but there is one thing that should remain consistent: humor. Besides the lack of humor, the script is sloppy that includes set ups from the book without their punchlines, and punchlines without setups. Aviod this and watch the miniseries instead.

Not quite the adaptation that we were all hoping for, but not the adaptation that we were all fearing either. Stop watching when John Malkovich turns into a CGI spider-thing; after that, the adaptation veers further and further away from the book and towards a morass of manure.

As a huge Douglas Adams fan, I really looked forward to this. And it's not as bad as some reviews say, but boy, it sure isn't great either. See it if you've read the books, but be prepared for things to not appear at all as you envisioned, and certainly for funny bits you fondly recall to be omitted. There is a funny bit near the end that Adams himself wrote to be added in that you'll never have seen before about queueing.

Although Douglas Adams' masterful and beyond hilarious narration is absent, it's still a faithful and stunning adaptation of the book. visually, it is mind-blowingly good. However, the humor, while successful in the source material falls flat here. It's also devoid of any enrapturement that most certaintly should've been retained. Good, but the top spot is reserved for the novel and TV series.

The book is unfathomably better, and the movie isn't that bad. Much like describing sex to a 10 year old (in the early 90's) this movie might give you the jyst, but until you experiance it (reading the book) your impression is hollow and empty by comparision.

This movie is the filmmaker's guide to taking a hillarious, profoundly clever book, and reducing it to a dull calamity of a movie adaptation. Malkovich aside, it also has the crappiest cast in the galaxy.

Not as good as I had expected, but that's because well, I expected too much of the movie. It's often a bad sign when I do that. Still pretty decent, I didn't particularly like some of the things they did. Changing how Zaphod appears, things like that. But at least we see the basics of the story.

Wow, I didn't know this got such bad feedback. I am a HUGE Douglas Adams fan and I thought this film, while nothing compared to the books, is actually pretty hilarious in its own way. Sam Rockwell isn't exactly the Zaphod of the original material, but he makes it his own, as do most of the other actors. There were some miscasts, and overall the structure of the story was bizarrely dismantled, but I still found myself ensconced.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is ultimately a fun film, although I think that not knowing the source material beforehand hurts your understanding of the references and in-jokes that would probably deepen the experience. If nothing else, the film has given me some reason to read the books that it's based on, as they seem like they'd be a lot of fun. And if they're more about the atmosphere than the characters and story, that would probably work better as a book than film.

One of the larger disappointments in movies for me, everything about the cast seemed to imply that it was going well. Martin Freeman as the lovable schmuck Arthur, Alan Rickman as the sarcastic robot Marvin, and SAM ROCKWELL as Zaphod Beeblebrox. The resulting film was a bit of a mess, with the best parts coming from the narrator of the guide, Stephen Fry.

Droll adaptation which is likely to leave new-comers slightly baffled, but generally entertained by the goings-on, even if it seems to lose its way towards the end with an overabundance of action and effects, leaving behind the rather sweet and good-natured characters and plotting of the first half. Fry's plummy narration certainly helps, and a gaggle of (sometimes unrecognisable) stars are a lot of fun (with Rickman's unmistakable dulcit tones utilised beautifully).

For true Adams fiends, only the BBC version will have to do, as this average adaptation falls well short of the charm and wit of the novels. Visually, it looks great, but it's too bad they couldn't have done more with the script.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a mostly competent, highly abbreviated version of the Douglas Adams book of the same name, and should whet the appetite for those who've never done so to read or listened to the original work, for no other reason than to be able to make some sense of it all.

A reasonably light and entertaining breeze through some of the funniest/most iconic moments from the book, but as a straight adaptation it leaves a lot to be desired. Why did Zaphod Beeblebrox not have two heads? Oh right, he had that horrible CGI face on his neck that is only seen like twice. *sigh*

They goofed! Mis-cast - even down to the voice of Marvin, mis-directed, and unfunny. The HHGTG was the finest radio comedy I ever heard. It made for a mildly asuming book, a mediocre TV adaptation, and a totally underwhelming film. Only Stephen Fry as 'The voice of the book' retains a fraction of the sheer joy of the original. This could have been so much better.

Never read the book so don't know how it compares, but I knew I was in for something completely wacky and that's what I got. Maybe these kind of super fantastical stories are not entirely for me, but the movie made it work. This one has a stellar cast but a lot of the attention is stolen by Rockwell's president, who keeps acting so flashy and unhinged that he steals the spotlight. Alan Rickman as the depressed robot is great, too, and Mos Def is actually pretty good in this one, too?

As Douglas Adams died while this was being produced it's hard to tell where his input ends and everyone else's begins. It's crazy enough and there are aspects of Adams' pure imagination that come through. The trudging aliens in bondage suits are a bit weak though. If it had an extra kick and flair it could have been vastly improved, as it is, nothing much seems to happen with great impact.
