A very fine character study as rendered by Richard Gere, with superlative supporting work(as always) from Alfred Molina... Fun!

Nice paced diversionary film. Also Alfred Molino's best performance since "Raiders" (ok, probably not true).

A fairly lighthearted affair that turns dark too little, too late. It's a 'true story' con movie that easily passes the time, but perhaps fails to bring to the fore, what is really supposed to be so interesting about what is essentially two mentally ill people abusing each other and their surroundings.

Unremarkable story about a remarkable con; until it turns psychological. The two didn't fit together very well but it was an OK watch.

In the end there's not much left in your hand. Interesting story didn't turn into an interesting movie.

" When Your Rival is powerful find an opportunity, Create a crisis for him But instead of taking short term advantage, save the day for him " Seeing this line in action is the main highlight of the movie. Which is really very plausible in any scenario and the good part is that the crisis you create can be shown as accidental, disengaging you from it, as much rightly this can be done, the more are the chances of you accomplishing in making the situation you wanted with least repercussions

Much lighter-weight fare than any of 2007's Best Picture nominees, but featuring first-rate acting and deft directing that makes for a film more readily satisfying than any of those films. A clever, jaunty musical theme complements it well. Certainly the best Richard Gere film I've seen, other than "Chicago," which was more of an ensemble piece anyway. I liked it a lot.

When the film focuses of the mechanics of the hoax and the delighted mischief of the co-conspirators, it achieves a nice energy. Then the backstories and psychological complications and messy romantic entanglements begin to swamp the film. Irving is played by Richard Gere delivers nice work as a charming huckster. Hallstrom, on the other hand, has now completely devolved from the elegant simplicity of films like Once Around and What's Eating Gilbert Grape to a style that is purely pedestrian.

note: watched a little over half and turned it off. Poor screenplay and Hallstrom's attempt to create a sense of the era w/cuts of television footage was too much to take. Carter Burwell's score was good but use of standard pop/rock songs was a little too been there/done that. too bad - source material is really incomparable. should've been great.

Basically, a quite standard "based on a true story" movie (i.e., uncompelling), but if Clifford Irving actually said even half the things Richard Gere does in this, he's my new favorite conniving smart-ass. Irving himself called this flick the "hoax" and "absurd", which, by the end, it certainly is.
