If you look past the fact it has the most generic story in the history of horror movies (face your fears!) this flick is far more entertaining than it probably should have been. Did most of that entertainment come from watching Haley Bennett look as hot as a beer in a microwave as she prances around in a bikini? Possibly. Quite possibly.

This cheesy, on-the-nose little ghost pic was unseen by most for what appears to be fair enough reason, though---aside from some flat, amateurish dialogue---I wouldn't say it's not worth a casual watch sometime if you're either poised for something dark but balanced more for kids, or if your kids are more in the mood for something dark.

I'm a huge baby when it comes to horror movies, so I didn't enjoy the copious jump-scares and all the faceless people and evil clowns. The kids are pretty good, though, and they play off each other well. Their individual scenes are boring because most of the life in the film comes from the kids interacting. Dante elevates the material, but some of the production is a little shaky, especially the CGI and lighting, which is way overdone, making it look like a TV-movie at times. Not bad overall.

Not bad, but much more suited to a younger audience. The acting was pretty wooden and annoying as well.

First 30 minutes was 5/10 and the rest was 1/10. It was an adequate start but it fails.* Casting, Acting : 2 * Script : 1 * Directing, Aura : 2 * Ease of Viewing : 3 * Naked Eye : 3

Script mediocre, but the direction is sometimes inspired, particularly the way Dante builds up to his big reveal, which unfortunately turns out to be predictably disappointing.

I realize this is really a horror movie for kids aged something like 10-13, like an RL Stein book on the screen, but it is really not good enough to hold the attention of anyone outside that age range. Watch some Eerie, Indiana episodes instead.

Some decent acting for such a stupid plot. Basically, this is a horror movie for kids.

Chiller for a younger audience. Nonetheless, its mildly entertaining and the three leads work well together.

Interesting horror movie "for kids" and about kids. Let down some with the younger brother's story, and the final act is a bit too on the nose, but it's a good watch overall.

Goofy kids horror film. Some really stunning imagery mixed in with all the silliness.

The hole is a good concept initially, before we learn that it stands for all kinds of shit we don't care about, like "the fear" or "screams" or something dumb like that. I dunno, mostly chatted with my friends while this played in the background.

(Viewed on 20/09/11): Touted as Dante's return to form, The Hole certainly bares some resemblance to the films he made in his prime, but he neither had access to the same resources as when he made Gremlins, nor were his sensibilities aligned with the culture, which has been an ongoing problem since Small Soldiers. The Hole is a chronically underfunded film with ropey CGI that ruins the effect of the somewhat imaginative set pieces, and the young actors lack sufficient charm and charisma.

I liked the doll and I liked the room. But the story and effects were pretty basic and dull. Haley Bennett was semi-good, but her girlfriend in the beginning was more interesting.

Okay well, this was a fun little throwback teen horror film in the same vain as The Gate or Trolls.

Too lighthearted for its own good, with door-stop pacing. The colour palette is disgusting. The haircuts scream Disney Channel teen movie. The music is generic. The dialogue is corny. It's not terrible; there are a couple of effective moments. For the most part though, all of the above undermines any real thrills this might induce. There's some nice practical stuff, and some infrequent & subtly detestable CGI. A serviceable flick overall, and not entirely skippable if you're a Dante fan.
