The Hole in the Wall

The Hole in the Wall (1929) is both Edward G. Robinson & Claudette Colbert sound debut! And Robinson's already got his gangster persona in check. Colbert plays the damaged damsel well too. But that doesn't mean The Hole in the Wall is a great film. As an early talkie it's a heavily flawed picture. Not Robinson or Colbert anywhere near their best. The plot of pretty much rubbish as well, but the dark atmosphere sort of sets the right mood for it not to become as campy as it really is.
