Riding at the pinnacle of distaste and displeasure in many ways, this is a remarkable film that is hard to love, just like the people who inhabit the picture-space. Reminds me a bit of the British-made 'Duffer', which drags you down in the squalid and squeamish psychological domain of its main characters discomfortingly.

I was torn between what I felt was a long and boring start, close to what I'd actually call bad, and an excellent concerning end that came close to what I consider great. Tried to cram in a personal wedding night joke but nothing feels right. This reminded me of Deranged in a lot of ways, almost too real an examination of this type. There's an excellence on hand here that is the kind that I don't necessarily like to watch for entertainment and more often than not, that's the extent of my desire.

A clear influence on everything from John Waters to William Friedkin's Killer Joe. A mix of humor and tension that doesn't let you forget how terrible these people are. Deserving of far more recognition than it gets.

The only movie Leonard Kastle - an opera composer - ever made. Too bad, because he's a formidable filmmaker in the New Hollywood vein, noticably indebted to Godard, but immensely original and daring. I love the feeling of intimacy created by the use of hand-held cameras, abundant closeups and jumpy editing, all of which work perfectly -- and Shirley Stoler is magnificent.

More cinematically effective and psychologically convincing than the vast bulk of much more expensive true crime films that will come in its wake.

This movie has a cult following. I'm not a member. Compared to stuff like _Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer_ this is warm beer: ugly and cheap, and not in any good way. If ever I figure out how to travel to alternate universes I'm going to see the version of this that Martin Scorsese directed

A modern love story about people deceiving themselves and others in pursuit of an existential romantic ideal. Campy and exploitative but also weirdly genuine. Born from a similar cultural space as John Waters. Some good visuals and acting despite the cheap production and the Mahler score was an inspired choice. A bit disjointed which is unsurprising since there were two directors before Kastle took over (one of them being young Scorsese) but that hurts surprisingy little in this trashy deal.

This low budget, black and white true crime film is a precursor to "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer". It starts out feeling like an exploitation film, but it's grim and depressing tone sets it apart from films that set out to thrill the audience with violence. That's not a criticism.

Murder is a sickly business in Honeymoon Killers. A nearly documentary-style, life in its victims, and a gritty un-stylized take on murder make Honeymoon Killers a near classic in a way -- a movie that leaves such a mark, leaves a faint stench of death on me by bringing me to close to the reality behind its story. It's strong, unique and honestly I don't think I can handle watching it again.

scorsese got fired for being 'too slow' and 'shooting a 200 page script in master shots with no coverage', so kastle could've been forgiven for going full cheapie; instead he provided one of the great one-and-dones, its distressingly black heart unearthed with all the patience and gracefulness you'd expect from a budding opera composer. stoler's presence looms over everything even when she's out of shot, and it's hard not to take a perverse pleasure in her grotesque self-actualisation.

Interesting commentary on desperation, but messy editing interupts the flow of the movie.

Bo

Schlock meets French New Wave? The film looks cheap but as it goes along the performances grow in you and the material gets darker and darker.

Martin Scorsese was actually fired early in production for insisting on shooting a master shot for every scene putting the production over schedule. When Leonard Kastle took over he seemed to just shoot the masters with not much more coverage. Incredibly stark and deadpan, THE HONEYMOON KILLERS never quite shows its hand. Satire, horror film, tragedy, the tone manages to be all three simultaneously which captures how we really feel about true crime. The lost shot is absolute perfection.

Lurid, sleazy, trashy and campy. But also pretty gripping and well done despite the low budget. Highly recommended for John Waters fans.

Based on a famous real life case of a couple, who killed women they met through contact ads, this has tremendous insight in how desperation leads all the decision of the characters. The victims gets into desperation, but also the offenders act out of desperation; desperation for love or money. The cinematography is gorgeous. The acting leaves a bit to be desired tho.

Damn. My only complaint is that there wasn't much of a build-up to the murders...why did they decide to take that step? Then the abrupt ending wasn't really explained either. Fav scene: killing of Janet Fay when she slowly realizes what is going on. I was even annoyed at her leading up to her end, with the cafeteria scene and all.
