The Host is abysmal and an absolute waste of talent, time and money. Maybe it will appeal to some people, but from where I'm sitting, there's hardly a single good thing about it, save for a few laughs -- both of the intentional and unintentional variety. It's a dull, overlong, poorly scripted mess of a movie, and I can't recommend it to anyone.

A fine enough concept, ruined by hokey dialogue and weak acting. Disappointing.

This is like Niccol pretending to be Bill Condon, trying to articulate a nonviolent, love-will-prevail post-apocalyptic sci-fi, a coming of age comedy -- the spiritual voiceover is there for comic purposes only -- and a romance of four teens. Well, none of these attempts work, because the actors are just pretty lousy -- Ronan struggles, as she did in Lovely bones -- and Meyer's material manages to be even worse than Twilight.

Saoirse Ronan prominently featured is the highlight of this movie. The alien voice from inside her was not a great plot device. The special effects were unimpressive. The biggest problem was the events did not match the high drama attached to them. Barely worth watching and entirely forgettable.

The inevitable Twilight comparisons, as I said my Beautiful Creatures review, all come out in this flick's favor. I absolutely adore Saoirse Ronan, and William Hurt's character Jeb is a fuckin' boss. I also generally enjoy this type of alien invasion flick vs. the "shoot, BANGBANGBANG" style. But the movie isn't without its problems - the male lead(s) are completely interchangeable, the romances feel forced (can be explained away as heat-of-the-moment, but still) and the dialogue is unbalanced.

The Host is one of the worst films I have ever seen. Can't believe Niccol adapted this turd himself; I could have achieved better results by taking a shit on the bathroom floor. The story is so bad I would almost suspect Meyer of doing it intentially to make Twilight look less awful. Every line of dialog is cringeworthy and the voiceover is a crime against humanity. Watch this if you want to lose the will to live.

It is just a terrible film, right from the ill-paced opening action scene to the terrible script that featured corny teenage dialogue. The Host never really stood a chance, the source material was terrible, the themes were horribly executed and the dialogue was simply atrocious. One of the worst movies I have seen in a long time, there is absolutely nothing redeeming about this teenage alien love story. Skip this one unless you want a few unintentional laughs. It's at least good for that.

Any potential the ideas in the film have is wasted. Instead, it focuses on a weak, unconvincing and bullshit love story. I didn't expect much from a story by Meyer, but it fails in all other areas too. The direction, the pacing, and the editing are all terrible. A lot of the actors are bad. Attempts at action don't work. The voiceover character might be fine in the book, but it's downright laughable here. It's a lame, boring movie, and a step backwards for female-lead science fiction.

Stephenie Meyer was so pissed that Bella couldn't end up with both Edward and Jacob that she rectified this by writing another story about a devout Mormon girl wanting to fuck two dudes and gave her two souls in one body. Everybody's a winner!

As a way to yet again justify her protagonist falling in love with two boys, Stephanie Meyer has given her star one body and two minds, so that the love triangle becomes even more hilarious and dumb - now, in total, it's three bodies and FOUR minds. Brilliant. The inner monologue between Wanda and Melanie is hilarious, especially when they're arguing about boys, and whether or not to kiss them. Bella...Edward...I miss you...

Commits the crime of having some very good ideas but being really tedious. I'm sure many of the ratings here are Twilight backlash but I didn't click on the source until after so I'm a bit more fair. Could have been interesting, manages not to be for the most part. Even the IMDB trivia is just casting nonsense and that doesn't happen often with sci-fi movies

So, Stephenie Meyer has a dream. A dream in which all young ladies are in love with two men. Conflicted. One dark and brooding, one handsome and headstrong. Oh man, get some new material. The Host really was Twilight with aliens and I can honestly say that Meyer has ruined Aliens and Vampires for me. There was a lot of talent in this movie but the poor script overshadowed it all. I feel really bad for Hurt, Kruger and Ronan. Browning had the right idea and just did a cameo. Bad movie.

A sappy pre-teen drama with "aliens". Once the film starts, you are bombarded with a over-dramatic "possession" and some really tear-jerking music. The acting and voice-over is absolutely horrendous coming from Saoirse Ronan. The Host is obviously targeting pre-teen audiences, so please stay away if you don't fit that audience.

The fact that this film have heart, and it actually really does, cant disguise the plotholes, the bad editing, the sometimes downright silly character arcs, and the extremely underwhelming action sequences (if you can call three cuts and a tilt a sequence).. Saoirse Ronan keeps this from succumbing to pure sci-fi trash.

A solid film, well paced, beautifully shot, and great acting, especially by Saoirse Ronan. The premise is interesting, but the plot is lightweight and focuses primarily on the teenage relationships, which is understandable considering the source material and target audience. It also bothered me that firearms didn't seem to have any effect on vehicles.

Andrew Niccol's direction and trademark spartan visual style give this movie some slickness, and Saoirse Ronan tries quite hard to breathe life into a terrible dual role, but the film still eventually crumbles under the weight of the awful source material. Why is the love triangle front and center when it doesn't provide any real conflict? Why does every scene feel like it's trying to be a climactic one?

Interesting premise. The execution is sometimes flimsy, the writing isn't always up to par -there were some things that don't seem to make a whole lot of sense and the dialog could have been better-, however I still thought this was a fairly enjoyable and interesting film. Maybe it focuses on teenage romance a bit too much, but there is actually a fairly decent sci-fi film/story to be found and some scenes are really good. Soundtrack fits nicely and a good performance by Saorise Ronan.

I don't understand the severe hate flung at this film. Sure, it's not "good" - but most of what's bad comes from padding the length, and its overall tepidness. The story itself is about as good as a mediocre Star Trek episode, which could be told in 40 minutes, instead of 120. And Saoirse Ronan's kind eyes could probably carry any material. Not a complete waste of time - just like half a waste of time.

They did a good job assuring it stays true to the novel. Amazing effects. Although there was a scene depicted on the book that was completely cut off from the movie, i would've loved to see it on film but I understand why they didn't show it. oh well. Still a good movie.

Oh great, another Meyer movie! Not only is the premise completely stupid{LOL PACIFIST ALIENS CONQUERED THE WORLD!!!!} but the writing, directing, art style, etc are all fucking awful. As expected of Meyer she has a very shallow perception of what love is so we get plenty of scenes where our young female protagonist makes out with many very attractive young men! I don't think anyone came to see the movie for its artistic worth but why would they need to? Not like that sells in Hollywood.

I didn't hate it, and it's better than Twilight. The Host has a promising start until 5 minutes in, and the most irritating voice-over begins. It does get better, or at least less notable, when presented with the asinine teenage love triangle that is the essence of all things Meyer. However, there are a few genuinely, albeit mildly, funny moments; and William Hurt does well as a discount Jeff Bridges. The sets, locations, colour palette and overall production values do help as well.

not a stunning film, but then again it's not a total crap movie either like some critics make of it. I didn't know it was a movie made out of a book by Stephanie Meyer. I'm glad I didn't know, because I think the whole "Twilight"-stuff is rubbish and otherwise I probably wouldn't have watched this movie. Phew, what a stinker. I initially liked the sci-fi premise and set-up, and Ronan has a fairly compelling screen presence, but it seemed to veer off into pointless and clumsily-handled romance that just annoyed and confused me. I'm sure I was pulling a face like I was smelling a turd for most of this. There was a decent story and film somewhere in here, but it didn't make it to the screen.

That bad adaptation kind of stilted and choppy with an espescially goofy, 'muh monogamy' romantic conflict.
