Days before his 21st birthday, William (Mark Webber), an actor, meets and quickly falls madly in love with Sara (Oscar nominee Catalina Sandino Moreno), a seductive yet elusive singer/songwriter. The film follows William from a Lower East Side tenement to a Mexican hotel room, to a snowbound weekend in Connecticut, and to a sweltering homecoming in the hottest state of all--Texas--in the pursuit of Sara. It's good, but it feels like it needed a little more editing and maybe another draft of the script. Either way, Ethan Hawke is a pretty cool guy, and he's managed to write some great stuff here--it's very honest and real. The scene between Hawke and Webber is really outstanding.

What I liked: the scene between Ethan Hawke and Mark Webber, Linklater cameo, numerous homages to the French New Wave, the boobs, the music, the editing and the ending. What I hated: some of the dialog, all his pathetic hipster friends, Laura Linney, and it could've cut about 15 minutes from the whole thing.

Wades around in maddeningly contrived scenes with utterly pretentious dialogue. Some excellent photography and lighting can't save a script that feels like an early draft.

all that time hanging out with linklater, ethan hawke seems to have picked up some stuff. he obviously has a knack for the dialogues, and casting female leads. the story is somewhat scattered, and mark webber is not quite ready for this role. moreno, one the other hand, is exempt from any critism because of her sheer beauty, it's almost like cheating to cast her in any production.
