Specifically, two hours of depressed lesbians. What fun.

Often laughably melodramatic pastiche of half-cooked stories involving tortured woman. The direction from Stephen Daldry is especially evasive and flat.

The screenwriters bit off more than they could chew, but at least they are aware of it. There are some great insights here and there but it's main themes of suicide and depression are kept at arm's length, hurting the film by not offering anything particularly poignant, but also guarding the film from being too over-dramatic and possibly insulting. All the key performances were stellar, and the narrative structure keeps things interesting, but it's overall mediocre and forgettable.

So slow and serious, it could have been called "The Days".

Why is this PG-13? The film is about suicide and female sexuality, yet it also seems afraid to delve into its subject matter beyond people musing pointlessly and almost crying. The ending seems to operate under the pretense of being some big emotional truth, but ultimately it's the cherry on a big ice cream sundae of nothing. The cross-cutting narratives and Philip Glass score reminded me of Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, and the comparisons are absolutely not favorable.

A very good melodrama, but doesn't quite live up to the hype.

I'm not even sure how I connected with this movie in such a profound way. It could be this time in my life, where many things hit so hard and maybe in a few years I'll see it again and it won't mean as much to me. Or it could become even more provocative as the years pass. Something... SOMETHING... in this film speaks volumes. It could be its approaches to the idea of happiness. I don't know. All I know is that it moved me. And I didn't expect it to.

Pretentious. A lot of talent wasted by Daldry, an extremely poor director. Nicole Kidman thinks she is good in this because she's got this nifty false nose.

One note. A film that confuses slow pacing and a beige atmosphere with actual artistry. Soulless and boring, and has a flat view of depression, which is a bit offensive.

Mutli-plotted film, that will make a mess out of you, and make you think and feel about death as you'd never did before.

This movie should have won a Best Makeup Oscar for Julianne Moore's old lady transformation, and a Worst Makeup Razzie for Nicole Kidman's fake nose. They don't award that Razzie, but, I mean, they should. Man, Nicole Kidman had an amazing 4 years or so, and a really shitty rest of her life.

My ladyfriend at the time wouldn't see this because she thought it would be boring. It's anything but. It really nails the whole "time is the fire in which we burn" thing

(2nd viewing) 3 women on the brink of despair, too bad Stephen Daldry bored me to sleep with his misguided direction. Performances aside, there's nothing to recommend. A missed opportunity.

Something didn't click with me. The cast is great, but I just don't feel like their stories were interesting enough, and I feel like a lot of it was over-dramatic.

I wanted to care, but I didn't. However, Ed Harris' character was captivating. "No matter what you start with, it always ends up as less." It's a very truthful sentiment.

Ensemble acting does not get much better than in this film. Stephen Daldry's best work, as well as Philip Glass' most illuminating score.
