Why is this PG-13? The film is about suicide and female sexuality, yet it also seems afraid to delve into its subject matter beyond people musing pointlessly and almost crying. The ending seems to operate under the pretense of being some big emotional truth, but ultimately it's the cherry on a big ice cream sundae of nothing. The cross-cutting narratives and Philip Glass score reminded me of Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, and the comparisons are absolutely not favorable.

Often laughably melodramatic pastiche of half-cooked stories involving tortured woman. The direction from Stephen Daldry is especially evasive and flat.

The screenwriters bit off more than they could chew, but at least they are aware of it. There are some great insights here and there but it's main themes of suicide and depression are kept at arm's length, hurting the film by not offering anything particularly poignant, but also guarding the film from being too over-dramatic and possibly insulting. All the key performances were stellar, and the narrative structure keeps things interesting, but it's overall mediocre and forgettable.

I'm not even sure how I connected with this movie in such a profound way. It could be this time in my life, where many things hit so hard and maybe in a few years I'll see it again and it won't mean as much to me. Or it could become even more provocative as the years pass. Something... SOMETHING... in this film speaks volumes. It could be its approaches to the idea of happiness. I don't know. All I know is that it moved me. And I didn't expect it to.

If you like introspective and challenging stories about women coming to grips with their own mortality, sexuality, and societal roles as woman and mother, the quality of this film should leave a lasting impression. Fans of the three leading ladies, and of the literary works of Virginia Woolf in particular, should be ecstatic. For the rest of us, this film is like medicine. We know it's probably good for us, but the bitter taste is enough to avoid it unless absolutely necessary

This movie should have won a Best Makeup Oscar for Julianne Moore's old lady transformation, and a Worst Makeup Razzie for Nicole Kidman's fake nose. They don't award that Razzie, but, I mean, they should. Man, Nicole Kidman had an amazing 4 years or so, and a really shitty rest of her life.

A great cast giving great performances with a VERY interesting and intriguing story, but something about the presentation of it doesn't work. I think it's the visuals. Such a drab, ugly film. The score is sometimes nice but at other times it lends it a Hallmark feel. And certain aspects of the story, namely everyone's repressed sexuality, rubbed me the wrong way. I really wanted to love this film but I ended up just liking it.

Deft, engrossing film built around the suicide of Virginia Woolf and the themes of her novel _Mrs Dalloway_, which connects with two other women: one is an unhappy housewife in the 50s, the other a woman caring for a former lover, a homosexual poet dying of AIDS. It is a deeply affecting account of the choices people make in their lives and the consequences.

A moving and intelligent drama that benefits greatly from the exceptional performances of an all-star cast: Streep, Moore, Harris and Kidman are all in top form. The shifts between the timelines are handled perfectly by director Daldry and a highly emotional script triggers off some truly heart-wrenching moments. My only complaint is the ending -the whole film feels like a long build-up and I expected it to finish with a bang, but the final act felt kind of flat. Worth-seeing nevertheless.

Lovely soundtrack. I found the story to be a little contrived though. Everyone's gay/bi, everyone's suicidal, everyone's miserable, no one understands them. This would have been more effective as a biopic of Woolf alone. I also don't quite get why Kidman won the Best Actress Oscar here - okay, so she was frumpy and nearly unrecognizable. But she wasn't mindblowing or anything.

The structure is contrived, and it's occasionally a bit obvious, but the leads are uniformly strong (Ed Harris is fantastic), and it explores its themes with enough subtlety and intricacy to avoid feeling pat or simplistic. It's also nice to see a hit film that explores sexuality without being heavy-handed or reductive.

Delightful cinematography. Has a 70's-Woody-Allen feel to it throughout, while also differentiating between the three periods/storylines, helped by great set and costume design. The music by Philip Glass literally breathes life into every scene. And the three separate storylines have been skillfully interwoven into a quiet but sound rhythm. The one thing that bothered me was that the characters are still a bit sketchy. Maybe it's because there are too many characters. Flawless acting, though.

Nice idea which departs from the women issue of the time of Woolf and traces it in two descending generations. The circular feeling and chain effect strengthens the femininity of the movie but eventhough it feels like the novel "Mrs. Dolloway", it lacks the diversity and scrupulousness of it when it comes to the details about the characters, and its narration is hell of a mainstream.

"The Hours" is directed by Stephen Daldry. Its script is written by David Hare and based off a novel by Michael Cunningham. This film stars Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Meryl Streep, and Ed Harris. Its plot focuses on how the novel "Mrs. Dalloway" affects three generations of women. All these women have had to deal with suicide in their lives. "The Hours" was nominated for 9 Academy Awards and won one for 'Best Actress'.

Stephen Daldry proved with Billy Elliot that he is the man in film industry. Now he made movie where only women are in leading roles. All three leads living in different decades (there is generations cap) and movie bounces and braids a cobweb between them. Even when the movie is suicidal, the moviemakers should be proud.

The cast is uniformly fantastic, and each actor gets their moment to shine. The problem--apart from the execrable score--is the literary conceit of the source material (perhaps the book worked better, but I doubt it). The connection between the female leads--Virginia Woolf and the Dalloway-ettes--is at once too obscure and too irritatingly obvious. Just tell one damn story at a time...MAYBE two, at the most. Truly great work from the make-up team. Allison Janney proves she can do ANYTHING.

This is quite a deep and moving film. There were some quotes I thought weere quite poignant, like - 'you can not find peace by avoiding life, Leonard!' and 'Why does someone have to die?' 'Someone has to die, so we can value life more. With contrast.' 'Who will die?' 'The poet will die. The visionary'. Its a thoughtful film. I found myself trying to guess in advance what the women, the mothers, would do - not always successfully, I may say. Its not a cheery watch but its certainly a good one.

Without the brainless hammering of Philip Glass AND the allknowing toddlers AND a very 2000-ish cryptic scenario too clever for its own good AND sickly devout wanking on 'poetic artists', without all this - not only being annoying on itself but freezing the erotic tension along the way - The Hours could have been dark and exciting.
