Dave Joslin, the managing editor of a big-city newspaper, is demoted and moved to the Miss Lonely Hearts column-writing department by the newspaper's publisher, J. B. Grennell, because Joslin refuses to desist in printing stories linking a gangster, Matthew Keever, to a murder. But Joslin, aided by Kit Williams, a newspaper woman with whom he is in love, investigate the murder case on their own time and, after several narrow escapes from death, finally solve it. (imdb)

They've used this script several times. For Hi, Nellie (1934), which is probable the best of the bunch with Paul Muni, but also Love Is on the Air (1937) with Ronald Reagan and You Can't Escape Forever (1942) for George Brent. This one tries to revive Wayne Morris's career as something tougher for him while also retaining his goofy charms. Never quite finds the balance and what's supposed to be both suspenseful and funny struggles with both aspects. Passes the time, but nothing more.
