Despite the epic scope and a couple of good moments, the writing is so abysmal and the casting so, so wrong, this has been rightfully forgotten. ALSO: I did love how only Jeremy Irons aged throughout the 50 years of the movie and how everyone in Chile spoke in various english accents.

So not like the book! Bad acting also.

This film had wonderful acting. It was weird. The plot was hard to follow at certain points. The characters were strange.

A tour de force of acting (pity it has Banderas and Ryder).

Olha, o livro é uma obra-prima absoluta e o filme em alguns aspectos mantém sua aura, mas opções adaptativa do Billie August nem sempre dão certo, mesclar Blanca e Alba, mesclar Pedro e Miguel, cortar totalmente os outros filhos da família Trueba, cortar a borboleta social que Clara era entre vivos e mortos, achei tudo muito duvidoso. Por outro lado o elenco é espetacular, acaso se refaça o filme vai ser difícil não visualizar Irons como Esteban, Streep como Clara e Close como Ferula.

The source material gave this film great potential, but overall fell flat of the magical realist masterpiece it could have been. The acting was not as bad as it could have been (The actors have given good performances in other films), but the casting was unfortunate. I long for a better adaptation of this amazing novel.
