Drama, Suspense/Thriller

Emily Crane is fired after refusing to give names to a 1951 House Un-American Activities Committee and takes a part-time job as companion to an old lady. One day her attention is drawn to a noisy argument being conducted largely in German in a neighbouring house, the more so since one of those involved is her main senator prosecutor. Starting to look into things, she gradually enlists the help of an FBI agent who was initially detailed to check her out. Just as well when things turn nasty. (imdb)

This nostalgic addition to Peter Yates' '80s spate of subtle, character-driven dramatic thrillers is somewhat vintage in style, which is one of its pluses. This is a movie where casting makes it all work, for instance because McGillis seems totally honest and aboveboard, and Mandy Patinkin can do the smiling civilized villain in his sleep. And Jeff Daniels---as the refuge of truth and sanity amidst all the double-dealing and duplicity---is always a pleasure to see, always adds something.
