The massive Hudsucker Corporation replaces its deceased president with a dork from the mail room in a ploy to manipulate the stock prices. The tone of this film is very much like a fable, nothing quite meshes with reality and the characters are all more like caricatures, giving the whole thing a slightly unsettling feel. Still, Tim Robbins is great as the bumbling but well meaning rube, and Jennifer Jason Leigh steals most of her scenes with her fast talking career girl/femme fatale schtick.

I guess when a filmmaker can knock out hit-after-hit-after-hit, it's easy for one to get lost in the mesh. I wouldn't have picked this one, though. There are scenes here that rival the funniest material of the Coen's [even if it favors screwball antics] and Tim Robbins is fantastic, essential like he only was in 1994. The ending did feel a bit old hat, but it's in line with the rest.

An incredibly entertaining and irreverent pastiche on Capra, old hollywood, and big business. The art direction evokes the gigantism of Fritz Lang's Metropolis and the retro-futurism of Gilliam's Brazil. Matte paintings and 1930s Art Deco galore. Overlooked, possibly due to mixed reviews and its status as a box-office bomb. For those who enjoy the Coens, it's in line with many of their other great films, and the scope of its production alone differentiates itself from the rest of their work.

Gets off to a slow start, but I came around to really enjoy it. You have to let yourself get lost in the theatricality, but it becomes a really fun ride once you do. Nice mix of broad, sardonic, and simple humor, almost all of which works. Feels almost like a period piece companion to Brazil, though I like this quite a bit more.

This makes the 12th Coen film I've seen, and I would put 7 of their films in front of this one. It is very quirky, but funny at times. For the most part the acting is good, especially Paul Newman. My problem is that the most interesting character in my opinion was Moses, and think the film would have been better with added depth to the character.

I was genuinely surprised because of the reviews. Definitely not the best from the Coen brothers, but not bad. Though it only has a few laughs, I enjoyed seeing Bruce Campbell for a bit.

The Coens' tribute to the comedies of the 30's and 40's. Such a milieu fits their love of regular schmucks and off-beat, rapid-fire dialogue. And it's a good story, one that would be right at home among the works of Capra, Hawks and Sturges. But the Coens have a tendency to go big, and in an idiom that already calls for big performances, it's a case of overkill. It all screams "trying too hard." But it does have heart. Leigh is a disaster on every level, but Robbins pulls off his character well.

A kooky, half-baked idea to begin with, the Coens make it sing as long as they keep the wit and slapstick fast and furious, but the generic story progressions drag. The magical wisdom from above that propels the finale is really below these modernists.

Probably the first Coens thing I ever saw, my memory of it is pretty vague but I do distinctly recall that it was mildly interesting, quite silly and a bit mean-spirited like most of what they do.

A few amusing bits but with so many better Coen movies to watch this is pointless and really blows in comparison to the other stuff they've done. Jennifer Jason Leigh is annoying as hell and the ending sucks balls, it just felt like a copout.

There's a bit more style than substance, but that doesn't really bother me, and it's funny enough to make it worth it. But jeezus, I'm glad I didn't see the poster before watching

I suppose the broadness of the comedy is one reason this film has gone overlooked in the Coen catalogue, but it feels of such a piece with their usual sensibilities that I can't understand why fans wouldn't take great pleasure in it all the same. Perhaps it's because I'm a sucker for its milieu, particularly the fantastic Art Deco designs and the riffs on 50s archetypes. The wordplay alone would make this well worth watching.

Definitely a lesser Coens, but still mostly enjoyable. I am amazed that they went from this box-office bomb to one of their most well received films two years later.

Stuffed to the gills with lightning-speed dialog and super-stylized 1950s motifs. Like Howard Hawkes combined with Looney Tunes, the Coens infuse a spastic energy and a satirical edge into every frame. Robbins and Newman are commendable, and Leigh is passable. Compared to the hefty production, the story is lightweight. This may be an example of style over substance, but what fun style it is.

Bringing humour, style, surreality and intrigue in equal quantities this Coen offering often portrays an almost Python-esque version of big business, be it with added throwbacks to some classic schools of filmmaking. Sadly the ending somewhat deteriorates, but before you are treated to plenty of cunningly devious dark humour and excellent performances by numerous participants, namely the leading Robbins. Despite being mean spirited Hudsucker provides solid, strangely infectious entertainment.

Snickering, the Coens turn the portrait, "That'll be two hours, please." Capra reaches deep into his pockets, clasping at minutes. The burgeoning throng begin to cheer.

The classic pastiche actually sort of works, if only for Jennifer Jason Leigh. Unfortunately, Tim Robbins is such a colossal bore I have trouble really buying that an independent woman like Leigh's character would fall for such a turd. Of course, it's probably because the Coens aren't really going to write a woman very well. Still, sort of good for what it is, I guess.

The technical aspects are betten than the whole thing -- the set design, the soundtrack -- and I guess the low fantasy came from Raimi, but this is still a very good picture by the Coens, a freaky homage to classic post-WWII Hollywood pictures.

Stylish and funny, with an entertaining lead performace from Robbins. This movies main problem is its length. It is simply too long for its subject matter and content, meaning it runs out of steam well before it is finally wrapped up. Even in its finest moments "The Hudsucker Proxy" doesn't quite match up with the Coen's finest work, so when it starts to flail towards its ending it really feels stretched and tired. But I'm being harsh, this is still a funny, entertaining, darkly surreal movie.

The Coens essentially crib stylistically from Gilliam's Brazil, though because of the anachronistic postmodern mish-mash of era, tone, dialogue, visual cues, etc. it doesn't seem to say much of anything other than its broad lampooning of corporate greed, commerce, fad mania, and inane ~'50s Americana (and lacks the benefits of Brazil's absurdist science fiction). It's still nice to look at, though, and as usual I enjoy the Coens' irreverence. Just doesn't quite measure up to the rest.

The Coens are amazing, this movie was so funny. I don't want to spoil the big reveal (which is also one of the best jokes in the movie), but the entire "toy" sequence is one of the best things I've ever seen. It's great, more people should see this.

A hugely under-appreciated gem from the Coens. Tim Robbins is loveable as the country boy drafted into Hudsucker's top job by a reptilian Paul Newman, enjoying himself immensely in a comic role. Jennifer Jason Leigh was often criticized for her Kathryn Hepburn/Rosalind Russell impression, but her verbal rat-a-tat-tat work well against the backdrop of one of the Coen's most visually entertaining movies.

Though the Coens are paying tribute to the Old Hollywood style of Capra and Sturges, absent is any of the humanity and emotion that underpins those classics of the past, leaving a hollow, somewhat disengaging façade. There are still fun, intelligent ideas scattered throughout, some as simple as a circle drawn on a piece of paper, and the production design is excellent, but there’s no denying it’s something of a misfire from the acclaimed duo.

I wish I could say I liked this movie a lot more considering my love for all things Coen, but this is just a weak entry in their filmography. Tim Robbins and Paul Newman are fantastic, but Jennifer Jason Leigh is pretty unbearable. The direction is fantastic as always but the script is paced a little strangely and doesn't even really pick up until the second half. It's not bad but for the Coens it is pretty disappointing.

A mixed bag. Robbins and Leigh just don't work for me as the screwball couple, at least not when they're so caricatured. But the stylistic blend of dystopian fiction and cozy holiday morality play is excellent, and some of the jokes got me real good - I have to award 5 extra points for the guardian angel's gyrating halo at the end.

R - Great fun, really well done throwback to an older type of film. Jennifer Jason Leigh is outstanding in a performance that would have worked just as well in His Girl Friday. Paul Newman seems to enjoy his antagonist role.
