The Human Comedy

Excellent small town family drama dealing with life during WWII.

Corny yes, but there is something really moving and likable about this film. Mickey Rooney is fine and Frank Morgan gives one of his best performances.

Gooey, sentimental morale booster in the best MGM tradition, a variant on the Hardy family series but with all the pretensions of its author.

Straight, unapologetically sentimental.

This telegraphs very clearly where the story is heading. One part focuses on a small town attitudes to the war and the other a family member in the army, worrying about him. And we all know what'll happen as war is going on and this has to program it's viewers mind to the reality. A very sentimental film which tries to bring a little comedy into the mix. Loved the the scene where mannequins scared the little kid! Not everything was drawing me in, but it was clear this film was important to MGM.
